It's different
This is very focused on allowing children to explore with different art supplies, often mixing in items you wouldn't usually consider an art supply. I appreciate that they encourage you to step back and let the kids make whatever they want, don't rush in and 'fix' it. I don't get some of the stuff they tell you to try, though. Mixing crushed eggshells into your paint or flower petals into clay or paint doesn't appeal to me. I also think it's a little weird to paint shoes and glue feathers, beads and pompoms to it. They do have some interesting projects: I like the tube sculptures. They punch holes in paper towel tubes and the kids paint them and build with them by connecting them with straws. I also like the wood loose parts self portraits. I'm not sure where you find a bunch of wood slices like that but then you glue soda tabs or paper clips or screws on to make faces. I think the kids would cruise through that project unless you have a lot of wood. Story blocks are empty CD cases that the kids draw on with sharpies and then glue tissue paper to. I suppose it all depends on what you are hoping to get out of it. I think it would be better for younger children who are just trying to figure out art. Older kids would probably feel like they were just making ugly junk.

A great book to inspire the development of an art atelier
Bought this book to inspire both our early years and lower elementary teachers and they have loved it! The book is practical and theoretical- giving you ideas of what to do but also why you might do it. It is also beautiful.

ART, not crafts!
I love this approach. Let children be free to imagine and create, rather than having them make identical paper plate crafts.
