You need to grease them pretty well first and then they come out easily. When you take them out (be careful-theyre hot) there is a small hole and a small round section visible, but its easily covered in frosting and hasn't affected any of the cakes I covered in fondant either. They're not extremely big, so if you bake a larger sized 4" deep cake they may not be the best, but I've had great success with 12" or smaller cakes bakes in a 4" deep pan. Overall, I would say they're very worth it. **Q: Are these effective for cakes taller than 2 inches?** A: Yes I used them for a wedding cake which was 4 inch pans and they helped the cakes bake evenly !!! It was a five layer cake and it came out beautiful **Q: I have recipes for 10" cakes that did not mention using a heating core; they cooked fine by lowering temp and cooking longer. Anyone else done this?** A: I always bake at 300 - 315 for my cakes and they come out more level. I only use these heating cores for 12" and bigger pans and for half sheet cakes and they help ensure more even baking in the center of the larger cakes. **Q: will these work in the topsy turvy cake pans? I need something to speed up the baking in the deep part of the pan.** A: I used them on my baby carriage cake pan and was happy with the results. I also learned that if you bake at a lower oven shelf for the first 20 minutes then move to a higher oven shelf for another 20-30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean I got good results as well.
