I have 40 " waist and 48" hips.... So large is normally too small for me. This size is ok though because of the stretch in the fabric. If I had gotten xl, I might have had to shorten the elastic in the waist.. I am 5'6" and had to cut off about 1 inch off the bottom. For me, this was great as I would much rather have something too long than too short. I'm very impressed with the way the fabric has held up. I did not hem them and I am very hard on them at work. I've already rolled over them with chair wheels a few times and they still look great!The fit around the hips and thighs is snug and clingy but does not hold you in. I always wear long tunics with these types of pants so it is perfect for me... So, you may want to go a size up if you would like a looser fit.
