1983 saw a fierce and restless young popstar seducing the crowds with her sassy personality and hedonistic, irresistible disco-pop on her debut. The feminine and flirty "Virgin" marked the beginning of a new era in pop, as she emerged in all her glory as the pop icon of the century. The ambitious and honest "True blue" became her rite of passage between girly pop and adult pop, engaging her with an older audience. Her brave and deeply personal "Prayer" revealed her artistic creativity and impressive songwriting skills. With the conceptually scandalous and musically adventurous "Erotica" she pushed boundaries and took unprecedented risks. She got her groove back with the transitional "Bedtime stories", putting her own romantic spin on the R'n'B trend that was popular at the time. She returned with the spiritual and transcendent "Ray of light", making one of the most phenomenal transformations in pop history. That striking fusion of electronica and dance was taken further on "Music", by bringing the acoustic guitars to the forefront; its sophisticated simplicity soared. She gave audiences an insight into her busy head with the equally political and introspective "American life", followed by the euphoric "Confessions" that brought her right back to the dancefloor that she so righteously owned throughout the '80s and '90s. She took admittedly the easy road on the vain and self-indulgent "Hard candy", and the detached "MDNA" showcased more gloss than substance, but there were moments of sheer brilliance on both records, even more so on "Rebel heart" where she sounded confident and rejuvenated, a set which was a bold reaffirmation of her supremacy in a genre she created and perfected. 36 years in music during which that young girl became the most celebrated female pop icon. Madonna.2019. Here she is making yet another comeback. There were lessons to be learned from the previous album, and I am so glad to see that she and her team took proper notice and did not repeat them. After that infamous leak in 2015, months prior to the release of "Rebel heart", the promo leading up to the release of "Madame X" has been carefully orchestrated and executed in order to avoid killing the momentum of such an anticipated return. The advance singles, the videos, the social media posts, the announcement of the upcoming tour dates, everything was done with precision and care, resulting in a nice built up to the arrival of her brand new album, 4 years - the longest gap in her discography - after the sizeable but underperforming "Rebel heart". So much has changed dramatically in music since, but Madonna at 61 returns undaunted and determined as ever.Since the career-shifting "Like a prayer", exactly 30 years ago, with each new album she explores new musical territories. Her records sparkle controversies, cause outrage, shift perspectives, and reaffirm beliefs. With "Madame X" she presents her most bizarre record to date. Creatively influenced by her expatriate life in Lisbon, it is based on her musical experience in the Portuguese city, which she referred to be a melting pot of culture musically. Freed from the need to be relevant, she has released a set that lives up to her reputation as one of pop's greatest risk-takers. "MX" is a cathartic journey, jumping from the personal and universal to the social and political, bound together by an exotic, breezy mood that evokes sadness and optimism through an astonishing array of musical flourishes, veering between pop, latin, reggaeton, fado, trap and dance music.Being an album that requires repeat listening, "MX"'s most Madonna-esque track is "Crave", a collaboration between M and Swae that starts out with a guitar riff, and is soon taken over by a contemporary trap production; a sure highlight. The other 2 are very different but equally impressive in their own right: "God control" is M's call to arms, quite literally. Starting off as a mid-tempo diatribe exploring the state of gun control in America with a choral backdrop, it then weaves into a thumping disco number with gunshots ringing out among gorgeous strings. "This is a wake up call", she sings. Indeed, it is, and it sounds marvelous, too. And then the vulnerable admission of the haunting "Looking for mercy", a cinematic, poetic piece that sounds like the lovechild of last album's top tracks, "Messiah" and "Wash all over me". Wonder how it is "to live inside the Divine"? The answer is right there. In an industry which is quickly becoming devoid of personality, Madonna has delivered her most uncompromising musical statement yet. "Madame X" is lacking catchy songs, it is not a product by someone who greatly appeals to contemporary audiences anymore, and it was not promoted heavily in order to receive the amount of hype that would benefit it commercially. It does not even have an iconic cover. It is, however, a piece of work by someone who has always had an impeccable charisma to be experimental, challenging, fearless, to push boundaries, and still come out on top. Her genius is that she never ceases to surprise and amaze. Regardless of whether "MX" turns out to become a smash or not, she is the Queen of Pop, if this title is anything to go by. Still standing, still standing out, she is a true pop royalty, and "Madame X" is another precious jewel in her crown. Madame X-citing!
