can the 32 inch version pick up a full soda can or 1-liter bottle?

It is clumsy to hold if you have arthritic hands or fingers. I am 79 and it is more difficult than I thought it would be. I think I could pick up a small soda can, but could never pick up a large bottle.

Would a 5 year ild be able to squeeze thw handle to pick-up trash?

Depends on the child's size/strength. But, the 32 inch length might be long for a 5 year old. A shorter one might be easier.

Why does this only have to be for Elderly?

On second thought, you make a good point; it’s not meant specifically for elderly people, it can indeed be a useful accessory for anyone. For example, instead of schlepping a step ladder - in reaching up high for something - you just grab this as an easier alternative. Thanks
