What is size of driver?** A: Hi Jim, Yes, to release the board, the head must bury itself a small fraction of an inch into the pine joist below. Otherwise, even a small amount of wood fiber (from the board) that's caught under the nail head will prevent the board from being lifted away. Tool with recommended driver is the V20-60 (6mm or just under 1/4". That will or should be less than the diameter of the nail head). V20-50 (5mm or 7/32") OK too, but a little less reliable for this situation. Both are the same price. **Q: can this punch old nails thru the deck boards from the head side?** A: Yes, if the boards are not thicker than 3/4". The V20-60 is the most universal model for this use unless the nail heads are very small or finishing nails. If all the heads are less than 5/32" diameter, choose the V20-50. For finishing nails, choose the model based on the size chart alongside the picture of each tool. The modifications are likely to not work well. Spoke w/ company owner, he answered the phone and spent 15 minutes speaking with me prior to buying. Works great! Adjust setting so it only extends punch as far as needed to eject nails. I was destroying wood, so I messed with adjustment of punch and now the entire tops deck pieces are preserved. I set it to punch about 1/3 the way into the top deck wood.pallet dismantling:after a day trying to find the easiest, most time efficient, and workable way to do this I have settled on a technique I like so far (it may change as I get more days into this).1. I "sawsall" (reciprocating saw) all nails between boards on all pallets. I have a 12" crowbar in back pocket as I go. I stack these boards on saw horses.2. I stand in front of a full size trash can (fits my height well), I have some trash in it (kitchen trash, dirt or sand, carpet chucks... or ?), something to absorb the ejected nail so it doesn't ricochet back up or damage the bottom of the trash can.3. I always have the small crow bar (that came with unit) in back pocket or tool belt, as it's used to pry Nail Kicker up when punch gets stuck in wood (if adjusted properly this rarely happens; if it's punching out to far it will tend to get stuck - either way it's very simple to pry the unit out)4. I hold the top deck pallets boards on the edge of the trash can, I have the sawed off nails facing upward so I can see them. I allow the edge with the nails to hang over the trash can and WHAMMO on each nail.5. I move the pallet board forward to allow the halfway point (with cut off nails) to hang over the edge and repeat.6. I swing the board around over trash can and do the same for last set of nails on other end.7. Since I plan on planing the boards (for a smooth look), I CHECK CAREFULLY for any other nails or random staples; as metal will chip to edge of a planer.
