The start of a great reboot franchise!
Game is great! Although I do believe that as I've been playing this game more and more, I can see the game being a little dated. Graphics are great (1080p it's always nice to see) characters look great, and the stages always have something going on. But sometimes the animations are very choppy and finicky. long string combos are very all over the place, and sometimes feel very hard to do. Gameplay is like that of Street Fighter 4, albeit less buttons (Front Punch, Back Punch, Front Kick, Back Kick instead of Low, Medium, and Heavy Punch/Kick) and this game relies on juggle combos, but not like SF4, you can continue hitting them in the air with normal moves and they'll stay in the air, and their "Gravity" will get heavier the more you hit them in the air. Fatalities are the highlight of the gameplay, as are all of the MK games, and they do NOT disappoint. (Except a few like Kratos's Medusa head one.) Some are very, VERY brutal like Sektor and Noob's. NOT for the faint of heart. Story mode is the highlight of this specific game (along with the later installment, Mortal Kombat X) I personally liked what they did from the beginning to the end. Actually connecting from the end of Armageddon to resetting the timeline was a very wise choice to do, and makes sense. Also makes it interesting how raiden wants to correct the mistake with only the "He must win" line Armageddon Raiden said, and ends up messing up horribly. Sound is... Good and bad. The sound effects are amazing, the music isn't. You can usually never hear the music, and it's just something that is just there for the sake of being in the background so you aren't listening to nothing. Overall, I think this game is great, I'd give it 4.5 stars, but since Amazon doesn't allow me to, I'll be courteous and give it 5 stars. This is a definite buy if you're stuck in the last generation.

Excellent game and package.
Concerning the Package The Komplete Kollection package is perfect. Everything is on the disc with absolutely no waiting time, there are no patches/DLC to download and install. The game is just pop in and go. The only voucher codes in the case are for the Mortal Kombat movie through PSN and a voucher to download a music album off of a online music site. There is no lame online pass code. Again everything is on the disc and ready when you are. Unfortunately though Mortal Kombat Movie is 6.6 gb, WOW. I was slightly interested in re-watching Mortal Kombat, but I don't want to use up 6.6 gb. As I was writing this review I wanted to see what the film download included since its a very large file.(Movie is converted to HD, also an extra animated movie after credits titled Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins) Well I ended up initiating the download by accident. I saw the usual download in background and that it would take about 100 minutes (I have comcast xfinity) I was about to cancel it but to my surprise another button appeared titled "watch while downloading" and the movie is now running. So you could just watch the movie and by the time the movie ends the download should be finished and then you can decide to keep or delete. Concerning the Game. I loved the story, it was very good. Definitely will replay. There is also single player ladder matches, 4 Test your... mini games. A 300 level challenge tower. Koins to spend on the krypt. Practise mode with MK mechanics tutorial and fatalities tutorial, also your standard practice arena against AI or Human. A Tag team feature which allows for 4 player couch play, YAY! Still have not checked online play. Only two things annoyed me; you can't skip cut scenes in story mode and also the move list as no page scroll feature, you can only hold down to scroll and its doesn't even scroll fast or smoothly. Well Netherealm studios know how to deliver a game.

Just The Reboot I Was Looking For
Growing up in the 90's I have nostalgic memories of the old Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis, and then not owning any fighting games on my new console I decided to buy this reboot. I have to say that this was exactly what I was looking for. It has all the old characters with all the old moves as well as a number of new faces. The graphics are revamped, but the fighting is for the most part the same as the original. Combos and specials are fairly easy to do, and there are a number of extras if you get tired of dominating your friends :) Also, the fighting is on a "2D" plane, or straight forward and backward. I prefer this as opposed to "3D" because you don't have to chase your opponent around as much or constantly realign your character so you aren't missing your attacks. Drawbacks -- I have two very minor grips with this game. First, the narrator voice is way TOO quiet. You get done with an epic battle and then you have to double the volume to hear the story. Second, Shang Tsung cannot turn into every character in the game, he can only turn into the character you are fighting, or if he is the computer, he can turn into maybe three different characters including yourself. The whole point of Shang Tsung's character in the old versions was that he could somehow turn into any character, no matter how complicated the button combination. Overall great reboot and excellent job keeping much of the old with the additions of excellent graphics and more fun extras.

mortal kombat reboot aka mk9 [spoilers]
since midway closure i thought this game would suck and be completely different but i was wrong i haven't played mortal kombat since ps1 era when i was a kid gameplay : is super responsive some characters are harder to learn than others but my only complaint is that this game hold your hand a little too much because there is a tutorial menu to that will teach u how to do a fatality i remember back in the day that in ps1 and ps2 era [when midway was in still business before they went bankrupt] that u had to practice learning how to do a fatality during a practice mode or during a match only but my other 2 problem is that when midway sold the rights to wb they keep trying to squeeze in unnecessary characters that doesn't belong in the game like alien, kratos ,freddy krueger, predator and more. i think netherrealm captured the feel that the original games had now online vs mode: first thing i think the server is quite bad because it takes an extremely long time on matchmaking to find a match or anyone to play with there was times i waited 10 mins+ until it found someone. in online mode it has kill of the hill tag team and 1 on 1 king of the hill is fun as u can watch other players matches and pick an avatar so u know when who's up next to play and whoever wins the most keep the crown. the only way to get klassic skins and any of alternate costumes is by going to krypt when its a 20/50 chance on founding it or beating a ladder mode [which i haven't played yet] the story continues what happen in armageddon when raiden contacts his future self which this game takes place. Following the death of Blaze by Shao Kahn, all warriors from the realms have been destroyed, leaving only Raiden and Outworld emperor Shao Kahn remaining. The mortally wounded Raiden is unable to stop Shao Khan, who now possess power from the elder gods. Before being killed, Raiden uses one last spell to send a message to his past self through his shattered amulet, with the vague message "He must win." During the events of the first tournament, Raiden sees visions of the future due to the message he received and notices his amulet has been damaged. Raiden concludes that Liu Kang must win the tournament to save Earthrealm. During the tournament, Liu Kang becomes the only remaining Earthrealm contender, due in part to Scorpion's murder of Bi-Han, in retaliation for the latter's massacre of the Shirai Ryu clan some years earlier. Liu Kang is successful in defeating the Shokan Prince Goro, as well as Shang Tsung. Raiden's amulet, however, cracks, a sign that future events remain unchanged. Disappointed with the sorcerer's failure, emperor Shao Kahn orders Shang Tsung's execution, but is convinced otherwise when the sorcerer suggests holding a second tournament in Outworld. Though initially refusing, Raiden relents when tarkatans invade Earthrealm as part of Shang Tsung's blackmail against Earthrealm. During the second tournament, Kuai Liang, the younger brother of Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero, and Smoke arrive to avenge his brother. They are followed by Lin Kuei cyber assassins Sektor and Cyrax who are tasked with retrieving the rogue warriors for cybernetic conversion. Raiden changes the timeline by rescuing Smoke, at the cost of Kuai Liang being taken away. Kitana, a long time servant of Shao Kahn, is compelled to join Earthrealm's fight after learning of the existence of her clone Mileena, created by Shang Tsung on Shao Kahn's orders, with Jade, Kitana's childhood friend, joining her later. In a bid to save Earth, Raiden substitutes Kung Lao in place of Liu Kang during the tournament. Kung Lao is subsequently killed by Shao Kahn, with Liu Kang retaliating and mortally wounding the emperor in a fit of rage. Raiden's amulet continues to deteriorate and he becomes increasingly concerned. Shao Kahn is healed by sorcerer Quan Chi of the Netherrealm, at which point, the two realms enter into an alliance. Quan Chi also revives Shao Kahn's wife, Sindel. In doing so, the ward that prevents Kahn's access to Earthrealm is nullified and a full-scale invasion is authorized. Raiden saves Johnny Cage from certain death by slaying the centaurian Motaro. Joined by police officers Stryker and Kabal, Earthrealm fighters attempt to stop Kahn's invasion. Kahn dramatically enhances Sindel's power by sacrificing Tsung, taking the souls he has stolen for centuries and passing them to Sindel. In the battle, many are killed by Sindel, and Kitana is brutally beaten. Before Sindel can kill her, Nightwolf intervenes and sacrifices himself in order to kill her. Raiden confronts Quan Chi and realizes that "He must win" refers to Shao Kahn himself; should Kahn conquer Earthrealm without victory in Mortal Kombat, the Elder Gods will punish him. Liu Kang, angered by the death of their allies, blames Raiden and goes to attack Shao Kahn. Raiden tries to stop Liu Kang, but ends up accidentally killing him in self-defense. Overcome with guilt, Raiden surrenders to Shao Kahn, at which point, the Elder Gods intervene, imbuing him with their power, which he then uses to defeat Shao Kahn for violating the Mortal Kombat code. After Shao Kahn's death, Raiden vows to rebuild Earthrealm with Cage and Sonya Blade. Quan Chi, now shown to be an agent of Shinnok, reveals that the destruction of Shao Kahn and the weakening of Earthrealm by the death of their fighters was part of their plan to conquer all the realms for their own bidding. which led up to mkx now the 3d models it really looks like it's a direct copy and paste from dc universe vs mortal kombat game it even sort of plays like it as well minus the unique features that game had but anyway i like it the story but felt a bit average

Very fun reboot of the original trilogy
Overall, I would recommend this to any MK fan, either those that have kept up with the series or those that haven't played it in a long time. It's a great reboot of the series, that essentially resets the story along with returning to the original gameplay (which is both good and bad). There are a few innovations that set this apart from other fighters and really moves the franchise forward. Graphics: The backgrounds of the game look fantastic. They are loaded with lots of interesting distractions, such as dragons attacking a city, Shao Kahn and his creepy pet cheering on your fight, flying pyroclastic debris, victims being dunked into the dead pool, etc., that really make the combat areas come to life. The levels are really thought out and highly detailed. The characters look great too, again very detailed and move fluidly. My only complaint is maybe a couple of models look a little off. For example, Sonya and Shang Tsung actually looked more realistic in Deadly Alliance. Also, the costumes are the ones from the first three games, so they don't look as interesting as those in later games (e.g., Sub-zero "suit of armor" from DA). I understand that they needed to use the customs from the earlier time period, but still I miss the cooler costumes from Deadly Alliance and Deception. The artwork used in the characters' ending uses a very different style from previous games (painted portraits or animated scenes [MK4]). I liked it, they look nice and it's interesting to see something different. Because of the upgraded graphics, I should point out that the fatalities are rather realistic (more detailed than previous games). Some can be pretty disturbing (Noob Saibot's being the worst), so definitely not for the squeamish. Story Mode: They definitely outdid themselves on this. The story is great, it's really fun to watch and does a great job tying the first three games together. Without giving anything away, I loved how it ends, it's a nice cliff hanger for the next game (of course there will be another game!). My only complaints: No chapter select? If you beat it, why can't you go back and just watch it like a movie? Or better yet, watch specific chapters? All you can do is play it all over again. And no way to pause the cutscenes? With life's little distractions, it's annoying missing some dialogue and having to start the scene all over again. Music and Sound: The music is just OK. To be fair, what they did was take the music from the first three games and did a good job of remixing it, so that's mostly what you have here. With that in mind, the music isn't as good as the later games. The sound effects (the unsung hero) are excellent. From the freezing and burning effects of Sub-zero and Scorpion, to the metallic clashing of Cyrax and Sektor, this game has the best sound effects I've ever heard in a fighter. I guess the developers agree, because the default settings of the game have the sound effects practically drowning out the music. Gameplay: Overall, very fast, fluid, simplified (compared to previous games), and fun. The multiple martial art styles from Deadly Alliance are now gone, as are the highly complex 6 and 7 button combos. Personally, I did enjoy the martial art styles, but I won't miss them. And now most of the combos are limited to 3 button combinations, and to achieve larger combos you now rely more on incorporating special moves and air juggling. The enhanced attack system is brilliant, that adds a lot to the gameplay and I hope that remains in future games. Basically, you have a meter that allows you to perform advanced versions of your attacks that either do more damage (e.g., Scorpion throwing two spears instead of just one) or are more difficult to evade (e.g., Sub-zero having a larger ice blast). I thought the X-ray attacks would be silly, but they turned out to be pretty cool, especially Noob's and Quan Chi's. Also, the AI in the game is fun without being frustrating (except for Shao Khan). The difficulty is highly adjustable, and on Medium or below most of the AI opponents fight intelligently, rather than just blocking and countering everything you do with ridiculous clairvoyance. Even Goro and Kintaro are approachable, meaning that you can actually fight toe-to-toe with them, instead of just trapping them in a corner and doing the same move 30 times in a row (like how Kintaro was in MKII). Shao Khan is the exception. Even on the Beginner and Easy settings, he goes completely ballistic on you, and you are forced to just do a cheap combination of projectiles and teleporting until you finally wear him down. Fighting him is not fun whatsoever. Also, no Motaro? No big deal, just would have been cool to fight him. I guess motion capturing a centaur was too difficult. This game went back to the traditional 2-D plane of gameplay. I preferred 3-D, but I can see why others would prefer 2-D, so I can't really say whether this is a good thing or bad thing. Here are my pros and cons of this: Pros: 2-D is much faster than 3-D, because it makes it more difficult to evade your opponent. Because there is less of a playing field, you spend a lot less time chasing after each other, and it's easier to trap someone in a corner. Cons: Without the ability to move in 3-D, you no longer have throwable/interactive objects that you can get to and use. Also, having a smaller playing field doesn't allow for multi-level arenas (like those in Deception) that are really fun to explore. Finally, you no longer have interesting 3-D attacks and sidestepping, which made gameplay a lot deeper (without being too confusing). Personally, I hope they bring back 3-D gameplay, but I doubt that will happen. Final thought: it's time to get rid of the block button. They made some small changes to the button layout for this game, but the block button is still here? Sure it's easier to do fatalities with a block button, but other fighters with fatalities didn't need this (e.g., Killer Instinct, Primal Rage). I think MK would get a lot more respect if they got rid of this button. Online: Very fun. They have one-on-one fighting, tag teams, and king-of-the-hill tournaments. I haven't had any lag problems and it's fairly active.

Best MK Game in a Long Time
I finally adopted a next gen console when I got a PS3 for myself December 2012, this was one of the first games I bought. I have played the MK series of games since the original was released in the arcades. In my opinion this has been a great reboot of the franchise and helped clean up some of the storyline clutter that had gone on post MK3. The game play is back to more of an old school MK basics, which in my opinion is great because I never really embraced the 3d MK games. It has some stunning back grounds, a cool story mode, and of course fatalities. What more could you ask for? The online feature allows me to play with friends across the country, which is nice since I don't get to see them much. All in all, as a long time fan, I think this is the best sequel to come out since MK3 Ultimate, or maybe MK Trilogy. As for people giving the game one star reviews for "missing" DLC let me explain how it worked for me. When I opened the package I saw two DLC vouchers, one for some music tracks and one for the original MK feature movie. The one for the feature movie expired 12/31/12 so I was out of luck there. Not really a big deal, except I thought it was a voucher for game content until I read it closer. Bottom line, this is the Komplete edition as it includes the DLC content. When you first load the game it does an update that installs the DLC automatically. All the characters and costumes are there. No need to bash the game because a bonus unrelated to the game itself is expired.
