Is it lightweight when this school backpack is fully packed? I gotta carry my laptop and books.

It's very heavy once all my books are packed in. Even just my laptop is heavy. However, it's comfortable to carry. It's just heavy by itself already. I'm also a weakling.

Is the backpack suitable for people of all ages?

I’m a 69 year old women and recently used on a mission trip. I have gone 14 times and used different backpacks. This is by far the best bag I have used. I used it on the plane and everyday for 20 days on the mission field and the bag held up great. I gave it a good scrub when I got back and it looks like new. I carried an iPad; clothing ; electronic devises, it weighted 29 lbs when I got on the plane with it.

Is the laptop compartment padded such that if the bag was dropped on the laptop side, the laptop would likely be safe?

Officially no, the compartment meant for the laptop is not padded. That's actually why I got this bag, because I needed one for my 15.6 laptop. As soon as I did, I slid it inside on my wooden floor and heard a 'thump!' No dice. This company has a padded backpack but this isn't it
