AN ALA NOTABLE BOOK • Another gripping novel of two friends in a world out of control from the internationally bestselling author of The Outsiders . "A mature, disciplined novel which excites a response in the reader . . . Hard to forget."— The New York Times “S. E. Hinton gave a realistic portrayal of teenage slum life in The Outsiders . [ That Was Then, This Is Now ] is equally remarkable—it is brutal, harsh, yet always incredible.”— Publishers Weekly From the time they were children, Mark and Bryon had been as close as brothers. Now, at sixteen, they were still inseparable, but things were changing. Byron was spending more time with girls, while Mark was still just seeing how much he could get away with—like the set-up pool games in Charlie’s Bar. Nothing serious could happen to them—they were just kids after all. Then Charlie got shot—dead—trying to protect them from an ugly little set-to behind the bar. Mark called it fate, but it bothered Byron. Why, as soon as anyone did anything because he cared for them, did it lead to trouble? Still close to Mark, and falling in love with Cathy, Byron didn’t want any more trouble in his life. Then tragedy struck, and Byron knew who was responsible. He had to make a terrible decision—a decision that would change his life and Mark’s forever. In this compelling follow-up of her groundbreaking novel The Outsiders , S. E. Hinton again proves her ability to capture the hopes, desires, and frustrations of a generation. Full of gritty realism and a compassionate understanding, That Was Then, This Is Now is a captivating portrait of young people struggling to find their place in a changing world. Review: Teen loved it! - My daughter in middle school really LOVED the Outsiders. She and her friends made it a whole thing, lol. I’m not complaining. Glad they are reading and connecting through the characters they love. Did some research and saw this was a good one for folks who enjoyed that book and sure enough, she gobbled it up and loved it, too. Not quite as much. But still. It’s hard to find books that she loves and this did the trick. I’ll take it as a win. Review: Great read for a 12 year old - Great read for a 12 year old. The quality is your typical paper back book quality.

Solid Read for Middle Schooler
This was a good book for my daughter and easy for her to follow, which made it a solid choice for school reading. The story kept her interest enough and had relatable moments throughout. It wasn’t her absolute favorite, but she still enjoyed it overall. A strong, reliable pick for middle school assignments.

Great follow-up to the Outsiders.
I teach 7th and 8th grade. My 7th graders read The Outsiders, so I have 8th grade read That was Then, This is Now. They like the connection with the Shepards and Ponyboy, but also that it is a whole different story with new main characters. Themes are deep and great for discussion; I feel like it is more intense (overall) than Outsiders. As a teacher, I look forward to reading this book each year!

Great book, great story, great lesson
I bought this book because I have always loved all S. E. Hinton books, since I read The Outsiders at school and I couldn't find it in Spain until now (just like Tex). This is a harsh book, and the first book in my life where I have hated the main character and narrator of the story. He loves Mark, but then suddenly he starts acting like a jerk, and end up betraying him, which will change Mark's life for ever. I like how the book explains (and, like S. E. Hinton always do, makes you feel with the characters) that to trust people never takes you to a good place. It says that at last once and it proves it with several stories that appears in the book. The end of this story, as I found out now, is in Tex, which I recommend too.

That Was Then, This Is Now
"That Was Then, This Is Now" und "The Outsiders" muss man einfach gelesen haben, für mich sind sie zwei Klassiker der damaligen Zeit. Like a friend once said to me, 'That was then and this is now`".
