With this filter, I can rest the ring on the outside of the cup, about an inch or so down, and the bag inside easily reaches the bottom of the cup. I rest the filter handle on the handle of the coffee cup to kinda stabilize it. Doing this there is no reason to hold the handle the entire time. This filter is large enough to make a whole pitcher, so depending on the pitcher, you would probably have to hold it in this case. To be honest, I didn't even look at the listing when I bought this, and I didn't realize it was as large as it is but I can say it is a nice and very well made product. **Q: Will this sit on a jug?** A: Yes, the Thika 5.5" Large Reusable Coffee/Tea Filter can sit on top of a jug or container while you pour hot water over the coffee or tea.
