GREAT GAME!!!!
mafia 2 is one of the best games i've played this year. let me start with the graphics. they are beautifully done! yeah there are haters out there complaining about the lack of detail to the blades of grass! and the lack of a big pool of blood from a downed enemy. pc and xbox has that, they say. well i say who cares about such stupid minor details. the biggest thing for me is the great detail when driving. no sudden pop ins of cars or bad frame rate of buildings coming into view. its like your driving in a real city. the buildings cars streetlights and people are clear in the distance not only closeup like every other sandbox game i've played. no blurry effects like lets say gta 4 or red dead redemption or even just cause 2. the cover system is great. the voice acting and storyline is awsome. no there isn't much in the way of side missions just stealing cars to sell and wanted posters & playboy pinups to collect. but thats just fine with me. better than those stupid pidgeons from gta 4. you can customize any car and keep them in your garage. the best part for me as a ps3 owner we get exclusive The betrayal of jimmy. most full single player games today arent as long as that add on. i've spent hours with the jimmy missions alone. i say if your tired of getting ripped of with games such as call of duty or kane & lynch 2 with the 4 hour campaigns of nonstop shooting and NO side missions of any kind then go out and get mafia 2. you will enjoy it.

Greatest Mafia Game Thus Far
This is by far the greatest mafia game i ever played. The Story is Amazing. The Characters draw you in. The Graphics are spectacular. Add your typical sandbox gameplay elements,(Vibrant Lifelike City, Fun Shooting and Driving Mechanics) and it all adds up to an A+ experiance. (Warning) This is an Adult game. I don't just mean because of the violence, language, or nudity involved in it. It's an adult game because it doesn't include all of those mindless play features that kids enjoy so much. So don't expect to be able to veer off from the storyline to go bowling or racing. Enjoy the game when you feel like being Vito Scaletta mafioso and when you feel like playing darts, bowling or multiplayer or something like that. Call up your friends, go outside and have fun.

Expectations can ruin your experience
Having played the original Mafia on the PC extensively, I was already familiar with the universe of the game. I was pretty impressed with the quality of the gameplay with only minor gripes (a patch helped a bit later). However, I didn't have any intentions on what to expect, or demand, that this new game should deliver. I've read the complaints. It's linear - so what. Its world is limited on what you're able to do - so what. It's not supposed to be Grand Theft Auto. Great atmosphere and vibe. Really. And fun. Worthy of playing and finishing (it's over very quickly, though). For the price available new on Amazon, it's hard to beat. Take it for what it is and you will be satisfied. Overall, a mostly impressive game that doesn't always get things right but does enough things good enough that it simply works. I get the overall gripes that reviewers have, and can see their point, but I had more than enough fun and entertainment with Mafia II that I hope a Mafia III shows up sometime soon.

In-Game Bugs Prevent Progress!
Experienced a couple of bugs with this game that prevents you from progressing past the first mission. It's unfortunate because this was my favorite PS3 game. Additionally, the cover insert had a piercing throught it and the "new" CD came with striations and scratches.

Good game
I'd really recommend renting this game first, or buying it at a discount, or used if you can. If you're looking for a Rockstar-type GTAIV or Red Dead Redemption game, this isn't it. The story line is completely linear, no side missions, and once you've completed the game -- that's it! No multi-player, and even though the PS3 version has downloadable cotent, it's pretty weak. If you're looking for a game that feels like a movie you can play, then this will satisfy. The graphics are great. Empire City is a delight to move through, and the 1940's - 50's style cars and fashions add a nice element. Voice acting is good, too. Punching and cover-based shooting take up all the missions, and while I've read some critical reviews of the mechanics, I think they're fine.

A thrilling game that leaves you empty when done.
Mafia II is set in 1943 to 1951 in a fictional city of Empire Bay, USA, a city so familiar with crime, youfd assume Congress vacations there after time spent in Washington D.C.. Therefs definitely crime afoot in Empire Bay. The city is controlled by three families, and the question is who are you going to befriend and who are you going to kill? You play as protagonist, Vito Scaletta, a Sicilian immigrant who doesnft understand his father (who drowns when hefs a younger age), loves his mama, and loves making money. Vito is injured in World War II and is released home for a bit. His best friend, Joe Barbaro, is involved in the mob and does his friend a little favor by getting Vito out on permanent leave. From there, Vito slowly and surely gets involved in the mafia himself, giving you all the ups and downs of the 1940s/1950s and the life of a mobster. Anyone familiar with an open-world game knows how the game pans out. You travel a lot, you can do what you want, and you complete story missions. This game isnft as open as others in some regards. For instance, beating the game doesnft allow you to just continue in Empire Bay. As a matter of fact, the only way to get back in the game is to jump into a previous chapter or to start the game over again. It feels a little behind the times, especially since the original Mafia allowed a free-roam mode. Therefs really not much to do outside of the main story. The side quest you pick up are strictly just thing to unlock Trophies, which is a bummer since Ifm sure the Red Dead Redemption system of hunting down criminals (or in this case, taking jobs to put hits on random people) would have made the experience a little more lengthy. The game does go for a 10 hour run, and while the entire 10 hours is exciting, the game feels like it just ends. Itfs length isnft the only issue. On my run-through, I played on hard mode and really, the game is quite easily beaten in this mode. Sure, I died a few times, but it really never even turns into a challenge until the last three chapters of the game. The cops are completely pointless in the game. Theyfre idiots. They loose you at any turn, they hardly put any pressure on you, and it feels like 2K Czech wanted the game to be efunf instead of a challenge. The cops rarely pull you over for anything, which I was highly disappointed in. Ifve ran past cops going 120 MPH on several occasions, only to have them swerve out of the way. The system is very broken. The combat is a bit generic, but it works. Itfs the cover system, where you pop out and shoot the ducks that appear before you. Sadly, you can not do a drive by on pedestrians, cops, or rival gang members. Vito likes to keep his hand on the wheel. The guns are fun to play around with. They range from a variety of pistols to the infamous Chicago typewriter. Mostly, youfll end up using the same weapon throughout the game. I used the shotgun more than any weapon. The only time I really needed to switch was if there was a crowd of mobsters or theyfre just too far away. Therefs also fist fighting, which leads to a game of jabbing a guy in the face over and over until you can finish him off. I didnft enjoy the fighting as much. Most of the time, youfre going to just use the jab button instead of just opening fire on the guy with full force. Itfs fun, but it would have been nice to see counter-moves in some fashion. Driving is unrealistic in some manners, and Ifm thankful for that. Therefs also no eracing missionsf. The only race you have to do is a race against the clock during one mission, and itfs pretty easy. Therefs a ton of cars, and whatfs cool outside of collecting them, is the cars change according to the era youfre in. Newer models will appear, older ones become more rare. I also liked fixing up my cars and the need to get gas. Therefs just something about running out of gas in a video game that feels refreshing. Some of the aspects of the game work so well, such as robberies. A little hint is if youfre low on cash, go rob the old man and his gun store. He has a ton of cash sitting in the register. I commonly did this throughout the game just because it was fun to do. I wish there were more aspects that made you feel like a complete criminal, but again, this game is strictly story driven. The only bugs I ran into was the frame rate and a few glitches that ended in me dying. The frame rate isnft horrible at all, itfs just not steady. It never caused me to die or mess up, it just ended up being a little annoying. The bugs are much like every game; generic. One mission had me meeting a boss at a coffee shop. I went to the wrong door and fell through the ground only to land on the other side of the map. Other than that, the game is overall solid. PlayStation 3s edition has itfs ups and downs. The downloadable content thatfs exclusive to PlayStation 3 is really fun. Itfs almost like a free-roam of the city. You play as a new character, Jimmy, and you run around town doing whatever you want, or completing several missions, all with leaderboards. Itfs also very The Club-ish with head shots and explosions adding up to points and combo systems. It makes the game feel like it has a purpose after youfre done. The downfall is that the PlayStation 3s version is missing some graphical aspects that the Xbox 360 version and PC version both have. 3D grass and blood pools most noticeable. Giving the game is very gritty, Ifm not really sure why the blood pools were removed, but apparently 2K Czech is saying they couldnft maintain a very good frame rate with the blood pools and grass. Maybe this will be patched in later, but for now, itfs a bit disappointing. Mafia II is definitely a title youfll remember, but much like a movie, when youfre done, youfre done. The DLC looks promising, but itfs all a matter of time. Recommendation: Buy, but you may only stay for the DLC.

Action packed
Mafia II really get player's into the game with the action and great story line. For example, my boyfriend is truly not a hardcore gamer, but this video game transitioned him. He became totally addicted from beginning to end. The story really increases your curiosity to find out what is going to happen next. I wish there were fun cheat codes though as Grand Theft Auto games. I would like to call it an older version of GTA video games. It might get boring a little with the olden times era, such as the music and cars or clothes even.

It's strength is it's story.
The strength of Mafia 2 is it's story. The story though not always evenly paced is very well done. You get to know these characters and really care for them. Vito is a war hero that wants to be a made man instead of a dock worker like his father. He rises through the ranks of the mob with his best friend Joe. There are a lot of twists and turns as they make and break alliances with different mob families. In the end you really get invested in Vito and the ending will leave you counting the days until Mafia 3. The gameplay of Mafia 2 is your standard 3rd person shooter. It uses an adequate cover system with an aiming mechanic that works well enough. You have a choice of 8 weapons. There are 4 different pistols and 4 different machine guns, along grenades and a shotgun. Accompanying a solid gun mechanic is the driving section of the game. The cars handle well and there is a handy speed limiter that you can enable so the cops won't be chasing you for a speeding ticket. The cops show up on radar so you turn it on until your past them. The city itself although pretty big doesn't have many activities to complete. The city basically just serves as a place for the campaign to take place. It doesn't have any other purpose. There are a lot of locations on your map but unless you want to buy a new suit they have nothing fun to do in them. The graphics are pretty solid throughout. Nothing will overly impress you but the game looks solid. The only drawback to the presentation is that there is considerable screen tearing when you're on foot. The cut scenes look pretty good and the voice acting is well done along with the musical score. 2K did a great job with the atmosphere of the game as well and you really feel like you're in the 50's. The campaign is about 10 hours long. Also if you get the greatest hits version your get all the dlc that has been released which adds a few hours to your playtime. Also there are collectable Playboys to hunt and a handy mission select screen so you can replay any part of the campaign at any time. The campaign takes a little bit to get going. The first few hours are a little slow in both story and gameplay. Like missions that make you deliver cartons of cigarettes. The second half of the game more than makes up for the slow first half with exciting gunplay missions and shocking story twists. If you are a fan of third person sandbox games then you should pick this game up. It is now down in price and with the dlc included on the disc it is a great deal. The campaign although not always evenly paced is well done and the shooting mechanic at least has no glaring problems. The story is both interesting and shocking and even though I'm not a fan of the mafia genre I could not stop playing.
