The space that isn't covered is due to the cutout for the rearview mirror which can't really be avoided. It's easy to install and remove. When I'm not using it, it folds up nice and fits in a sleeve that was included. I didn't expect it to work as good as it does. I haven't tried it yet in the sun, but I think it will do a great job of keeping the interior cool in the Arizona sun! The cutout for the mirror/stalk is a bit large, but the cutout allows the shade to sit up tight against the windshield with no other gaps at all.
