WOW -- If you have a need for speed look no futher!
I was a little skeptical about seeing much improvement, I have a brand new HP PC that is fast as greased lightening and so I pretty much expected everything in it to be fast but that was clearly not the case for the Blu-Ray R/W unit that is internal SATA bus attached and should be far faster than anything USB 3 attached but not so. Pro's: - Very Fast, hitting reads at 12x on DVD and 6.7x on BR, and everything else is even faster - True plug n' Play for Win7 (I have not tried Win10 or Mac) - Lay-Flat form factor - Motorized Tray, no fumbling with a pressure hub on a flimsy tray - Heavy with good rubber pads, does not slide around even on a slick surface - For Win7 all needed drivers are already part of the OS, no need to load their bloatware Con's: - Crippled software that is 6 major revisions behind and lots of nag screens to upgrade (Cyberlink's fault) - Count on buying the upgrade if you do not already own a BR authoring package (Cyberlink is a very good package, Roxio also if you prefer) The con's were not an issue for me, I already have the latest CyberLink PowerDirector & PowerDVD, Roxio Creator and other packages to deal with the discs. Here is a BR and DVD comparison to the build in BR unit in my PC (All tests were done on USB 3, USB 2 will be a lot slower) - Rip a 30GB HD home movie from Blu-Ray -- 16 Minutes on Buffalo / 34 Minutes on HP Player -- (30.2 M/s @6.7x Read) - Rip a 4GB HD home movie from DVD -- 4.5 Minutes on Buffalo / 22 Minutes on HP Player -- (16.1 M/s @ 12.2x) I have not found any tools this drive does not work well with including, MakeMKV, CyberLink PowerDirector, Replay Convert, VideoReDo+, VLC and of course WMC and WMP. It would be hard to be happier with the performance, the looks, size, and weight, for a desktop situation, this would not make a good portable drive it is took big and heavy compared to ones designed for portable use. Also keep in mind that for normal playback speed is not a consideration since everything plays at 1x. A steady disk reader/writer. Excellent quality
The CD/BLUE RAY reader is well made and works perfectly. The seller has been very kind and solved quickly all my desires. I strongly suggest him. Shipping in Italy has been perfect and within the planned times.

I was expecting nothing and was pleasantly surprised
Using it to create my plex library. It's working like a champ on new blurays/dvds and decent on somewhat scratched blurays/moderately scratched dvds. Many of our discs were left out of the sleeves and cases for long periods of time with kids playing around/on them and I'm surprised that I've been able to rip over half of them. It feels solid and I feel like I made a good purchase. Works well with MakeMKV

Spent days trying to get it working...ended up returning it. It never successfully burned a BD.
Did research before buying and went with Buffalo because of two big items: the enclosed software and the unit's stated burn speeds. However, this turned out to worse on-line purchase I have ever experienced. Both the software provided and the unit itself fails. I spent hours of time over multiple days, using multiple options but without successfully burning even one BluRay disk. (Made about 10 coasters though!). First the software: the overhead on the video is terrible. Have 7 gig of video? The final rendering of this results in over 22gig on the BD disk (if it actually successfully burned). I am guessing if you upgrade the software it shrinks the overhead, but wasn't going to even take that chance. The software DOES successfully create DVD's and I was successful burning a (smaller) video to my internal DVD writer using it. Also, the calculation of available space on the Blu-Ray is flawed. It stated, that the video I had created was going to need 21g for the BD, but when I burned the rendering to my harddrive the total was over 23g, which was too large for the Sony BD's I had. So you need to plan to TRIPLE whatever your current video sizes to estimate how many video clips you can burn to a BD with this software. (Another video editing software I have did not have near this much overhead or calculation poblem.) The Buffalo Unit itself: tried it with 2 laptops, one running Windows 7, the other Windows 8 (< eight months old). Neither could successfully write to the BD disks either with a very small BluRay video from the included software, or via Windows Explorer. (Also, tried using another Video authoring software tool, but it failed to burn to the unit as well.) On the Windows 8 laptop, I received "HW encode errors" during rendering, so turned hardware encoding off, and it took over 2 hours to render a file that would not burn. Note: I purchased the specific Sony BD's that Buffalo's website states provided 16x speed, so brand should not have been a problem. Very disappointed. Returned it, no I'm just out the cost of the BD discs and shipment box/packing purchase. Finally decided BluRay is not really necessary. Just going to play videos directly from laptop to TV via HMDI or Wireless.

Great for Bluray but has trouble with DVDs
I bought this drive to use with my laptop since disc drives aren't standard on laptops anymore. It's easy to install and plays Bluray excellently. The write function is great too. The only issues I have with this drive is: 1, Playing and writing DVDs is a 50/50 gamble. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. All the DVDs I've tried are the correct region with no scratches or defects. Many of them are brand new and still won't play. It occasionally happens with Bluray as well. 2, Sometimes the drive won't spin up and I have to disconnect the drive from my laptop and the power source, then restart my laptop and re-set up the drive to get it working again. This happens roughly every other day. There's no power issues since the drive is plugged directly into the wall and the USB ports on my laptop are in great shape since the laptop is new, so power and connection aren't the problem. All I can think of is there may be an issue with the DVD drive sensor. Still, I don't regret the purchase even if its sometimes troublesome to use. Luckily, I'm a very patient person and use it primarily for media. If I had to use it for work, it'd be a different story.

Amazing!
I had ordered a different writer/burner last year when my pictures on my hard drive started to corrupt. I got one from a different brand after researching for days. I hated it! It spit out half of the disks as errors when some of them were perfectly fine and it took anywhere from 2-8 hours to write one disk and half the time spit it out halfway to two thirds of the way through it was infuriating! However! This year I needed to find another one due to my computer having serious issues and most likely needing to be wiped. I did more research and decided on this one! The software you have to download is a little confusing but I got through it. I've done one disk so far with no issues! It hasn't spit the disk out, completely finished the writing in less than 30 minutes (wrote about 20gb) and is more than 60% through the verification at less than 40 minutes total so far for everything! I may skip the verification next time to cut down on time but I'm honestly really impressed and will be keeping this one!!

Works great for archival backup and great speed.
I have bought several of these as archival storage using windows and adding files as they need to be backed up just like I would be moving to another folder. Speed of transfer is far better than most other bluray disk burners. I rarely have any coasters being made using this device which is an improvement over other options. I have bought several others to keep on hand just in case or if I upgrade other computers. I do not use these to rip blurays.

The complete package.
I started digitizing my library the day I got it (note: it comes with playback and burning software, but ripping is separate). These days, a reliable BD drive that can rip and burn discs is hard to come by, and most PCs donโt even have a slot for an optical drive anymore, so having it in its own case is perfect. An added bonus is being able to move it around and use it as a portable media player. Highly recommend.

Good, reliable data backup on Mac OS
I needed to backup files on BD-R on Mac . Using the Buffalo Mediastation seemed to be the best solution. Using the free Burn app, burns a 25gb BD-R SL in 10 minutes at 13X speed. So far working like a charm!
