The serrated edge is on the right side, but I only really notice it when I'm cutting into roots. The blade is centered and can take a lot of prying with out bending. This is a very good digging tool. I am an amateur metal detector and outside of my detector itself, this is the most valuable piece of equipment I carry. I only went through a few Walmart gardening spades before I realized the need for something really sturdy. This is it! As you have read in other reviews... this thing will NOT bend. For digging plugs in hard dirt, I can put all my weight (approx. 200 lbs) on the hilt to push it down and then pry up. I'm telling you... this thing doesn't bend. The serrated edge helps a lot with roots, too.I'll be honest. I don't keep this in a case in my bedroom. It stays in my bucket in the garage and there is no rust on it. The only issue I have had is the red handle slides on me a bit, now. When I get tired enough of that I'll put some rubber cement in there and be done with it. Guys, if you are a treasure hunter or even a flower gardener and you need a good spade... make the investment. There will be no regrets. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ WOW *by J***Z on October 4, 2014* I usually don't write reviews lets start with that. When I do that means it's a hell of a product. I started metal detecting about 3 years ago. I like most beginners just used whatever I had around the house for digging. I recently bought the Garrett digger. Looked like a mean tool and thought that I would try it out. It is not a terrible tool but it has a rubber texture on it (maybe to prevent rust) that makes it hard to push into the ground. It is a strong tool and has more of a bend in the center which makes it better for scooping dirt out than the lesche. NOW onto the lesche compared to the Garrett. The lesche I mean what can you say. It's a monster. It slides into nearly every ground type. And I am by no means easy on my diggers. When I received the lesche I tried it out the first day. I have very hard ground right now because we haven't had rain in forever. It has a LOT of rocks also. I had a hit with my 3030 and started to make my plug. Again it plunged into the ground with very little effort. It makes a terrific plug and when I was done you could barely tell I dug the plug. Long story short if you're into metal detecting BUY THIS PRODUCT. Don't fall for garrets digger as it doesn't compare at all.
