The edge is not smooth, there is, I don't know what it's called, but it looks like a rolled seam, much better than plain smooth. If you want to add lace or fringe etc this edge will make it so easy. It does close with a zipper and I've been very careful with it since it looks and feels lightweight. Follow instructions as to pillow sizing, order case one size smaller than pillow to get a tight and smooth look
