Contigo Luxe Thermal Travel Mug

I have been a fan of Contigo since I bought my first "west loop" back in 2014. For someone that is on a computer keyboard much of my waking hours, a spill-proof coffee cup is a must and my Contigo has saved me from countless spills. I also golf. And the one-hand operation of the Contigo is a huge boon when pushing a cart and futzing with club as I walk. I even use Contigos at my bar as cocktail shakers/reserves when entertaining - nice to be able to prepare a guest a cocktail and have their second already chilling in an insulated Contigo! NOTE: an air-tight shaker is required for many cocktails containing seltzer like the legendary Ramos Gin Fizz - every serious mixologist should have Contigos at the bar for mixing and service. The locking mechanism is a nice feature if you plan to stuff your Contigo in a backpack (not something I do often but I can see the utility). Some caveats: These are water-tight containers so carbonated and even very hot liquids will require regular "burping" to release pressure or the Contigo can blow its top! And when sealing a Contigo, remember to press the button while you screw on the top to prevent over-flowing a full bottle. With this LUXE edition, Contigo has finally perfected their product. It is not only spill-proof (and great looking) but it is now dishwasher safe (silver model). Contigos are not indestructible, however. Eventually the seals will start to leak. Replacement gaskets are available and relatively easy to change out but I have found they rarely fix a leak. And that is why I am back (happily) buying two more today and felt I should write a positive review.

My favorite travel mug. Keeps coffee hot for hours. Dishwasher safe and really tough. Mine looks like new after many uses.

I was looking for a leak proof coffee mug that could actually be washed in the dishwasher, because my other coffee mugs were driving my wife crazy, because they always had to be hand washed. This mug has a brilliantly simple design, and yet is very effective in preventing spills. It only keeps things hot for about 3-4 hours, but that’s usually plenty long enough to finish a beverage. It just fits under the front of my Keurig. Dishwasher safe in TOP RACK ONLY! Update: It is one year later, and BOTH of my Contigo mugs (I bought two ... although my wife has basically confiscated my red one) are still performing like champs. My wife is in love with them, too (which is why I've "lost" one), because she's smitten with the 3 top features: Dishwasher safe (top rack ONLY), sealing feature which opens up fully for cleaning (My old ones would just accumulate gunk in the mechanism that you couldn't reach even with a small brush, which could end up in your coffee. I know ... sounds delicious, doesn't it?), and the locking feature which allows you to throw your mug into a bag without fear of the plunger getting pushed inadvertently. Our assessment: This mug is far superior to any other mug we've ever had. Granted, we have not invested large amounts of money into the priciest brands, but for the money ... this mug wins.

I didn’t expect much from a stainless-steel mug, but the Contigo Luxe 16 oz AUTOSEAL Travel Mug really earns its hype. The AUTOSEAL lid sealed tighter than my “I’m-on-a-diet” resolve at 2 p.m. — no drips, no spills, no coffee volcanoes in my bag. Hot drinks stayed hot for a solid few hours, and cold stuff stayed cold much longer than I managed to ignore it. It fits neatly in most cup holders (yes, even the cramped one in my car), and cleanup’s easy when you’re done — a rare plus for someone whose dishwasher habits revolve around “throw-it-in-and-forget-it.” If you want a mug that’s more “reliable morning sidekick” than “possible coffee hazard,” this one’s a winner.

the 2 prior travel mugs didn't fail or break, we only got new ones because the prior had a colored finish on the outside that had chipped away over time, and they got dented from heavy use. when they start to look really beat-up and shabby, we donate them. this time I chose the plain stainless finish on the outside. there was a SUPER deal over Thanksgiving weekend on a 2-pack, basically 2 for the price of 1. so, if anything happens to the first, we've got a spare. my husband closes the top on the travel mug and locks it, and then throws this into his backpack which he hauls to/from work 5 days a week. it never leaks or spills, and sometimes if he doesn't finish his coffee at the start of the day, he'll have the rest on the way home from work, and finds that the coffee is still hot after 10 hrs, which is amazing. it's leak-proof, remarkably well-insulated and super lightweight. we clean ours by throwing it into the top rack of the dishwasher. also, we give the inside a thorough soak in a vinegar/baking soda solution every few months, because unlike the name suggests, "stainless steel" actually does get stained over time by coffee/tea. that's no fault of the product, just the reality of the material. in addition to running through the dishwasher, we give the lid inner workings a thorough, detailed cleaning every few weeks. we love this product and this brand, and it's why we keep coming back. I highly recommend this product.

Can a product be too good? Too effective at its intended purpose? I think this one is. It's sleek, professional, efficient, very easy to clean, fits my cup holder perfectly, and keeps my coffee hot for hours. No seriously, HOURS. It's annoying. I make my coffee at 0530 as the final step before I walk out of the door for work. Sometimes work is busy at 0700 and I don't have time to get to my coffee until 1000 or so. This has happened multiple times... and my coffee is STILL HOT. Almost as hot as when I made it. WTH? I mean, zero thermal loss? Really? I go to take a sip thinking "surely, it's got to be room temperature by now. At least close to it" and boom, I'm shocked by how hot and perfect it sits but also angry at my arrogance for having almost burned myself by underestimating the exquisite feat of design and engineering of this marvel of modern achievement. I demand to know what sorcery is behind the creation of this item. This is messing with my reality. What executive approved this? What engineer chose its dimensions, wall thickness and steel type? Who designed the cap and pouring mechanism because they need a FKNG AWARD. They need to be publicly recognized for outstanding achievement in raising the bar for this seemingly insignificant yet profoundly important modern convenience of 1st world comfort.

If you are looking for a travel mug to go through most conditions, this is fine. However, I have had it leak a little at a time in multiple instances leading to coffee on my car seats and tea in my bag. The silicone cap that provides the seal between the inside of the cup and the outside where you drink from is not always airtight. I have on multiple occasions seen bubbles of coffee hiss out of the opening after closing it, leading me to believe a vacuum occurred inside and thus leaking air and liquid out the top. It doesn't keep things hot/cold for more than like 3-4 hours unless you have either ice or something conductive inside of it. Also, I left some coffee with a cinnamon creamer in it overnight and that smell has never gone away, smelling similar to spoiled milk and coffee. I tried multiple baths of vinegar and soapy water (boiling water added to both), but I only lessened the smell, it is still there. Granted, the smell is only in the top, but that is also the area that I am drinking from.

I noticed some less than stellar reviews of this mug - but I really can't understand why. I've had mine maybe 5 months now, and it's been nothing but fantastic. I can brew my coffee before work, and it's still warm at the end of the day - most times I don't let it last that long of course. But the mug can hold it warm - tried and tested many times. When going to the office, I have the mug on it's side in the outer pocket of my bag, not once has it leaked or even dripped - very good seal. Pressing the button to let your coffee out is a bit of a hassle to start with, but actually it becomes second-nature very quickly and it's actually quite useful - I've had my mug next to my computer and a couple times I've accidentally knocked it over and wasn't even the least bit concerned of a leak. The seal and construction really is good. Except the noise it made because of the heavy construction - and my colleagues staring at me - my computer was safe. I observe one review saying the paint would peel off - I can assure you it doesn't at all, I've used a dishwasher, hand wash and not one single pant peel. The only scratch mine has is because I dropped it from 5 foot when I placed it on my hand railing and it fell onto concrete and even then it only scratched it didn't even dent - it's sturdy and strong. One last thing - it fits the car cup holder perfectly (many don't). Anyway, for the price - you can't go wrong in my opinion.
