Finally a fat loss book that includes exercise programming and no "fad diets"
If I was to recommend one book to someone looking for the "total package" this would be it. It includes more than meal planning. I think the title may throw people off. There is more workout programs in this book than any book I've purchased. I truly mean My last statement. I am a health/fitness enthusiast and own close to 200 books on the topic. Honestly I think the workout programs in this book are more valuable than the meal planning/ diet/nutrition advice. Although that is great too. Maybe do some updates since the book is a little older now than the latest science.I would say there has to be at least a year's worth of workout programs including numerous phases each lasting a month, then he switches it up (strength/endurance/metabolic). Expertly written to include push/pull/hinge/squat/press in every workout, but the way it is written, it is not over training like so many fitness books these days. The best part of these programs is not much equipment is needed, and no gym if that's what you prefer. Basically your body, a kettlebell and a pull-up bar and you can follow ALL the programs in this book. No machines, no complicated movements, simple push pull press hinge. The kettlebell is my favorite tool to train with and these programs primarily include the kettlebell more than any other exercise.Health & Fitness is more than a passion for me, it's a lifestyle. Programming is one of my strongesr suits. As a certified CPT , I've designed hundreds of custom programs over the years. With that being said, it is very hard for me to follow some one elses program. I will almost always change some of the exercises...then came this book. Without exaggeration; this is the first time I was able to follow someone else's program without changing anything at all. If you knew me, you would understand, I have severe OCD when it comes to my programs. This is the only one.For example, The 8 week "BRING IT" program is my favorites in this book. For the first time in a decade I was actually able to follow some one elses program without modifying or changing one exercise, set, rep, etc for EIGHT WEEKS!In addition to the meal planning, carb cycling and workout programs; it is a good read. Dan John's uniques writing style is genuine and he makes me laugh once in a while. Similar to Pavel, but not as corny.I made a custom "Meal Planner" spreadsheet in Excel. If you create your own meal planner, all you have to do each week is print out a blank one and pencil in your meals. The benefit meal planning brings will also save you money when you go grocery shopping as you only buy what you need. Additionally, you will find yourself ordering out less. But the beauty of this style meal planning is you can program a day for ordering out, a restaurant, events, holidays, etc...G

Must-read for fat loss. Also, for me, hugely inspirational. A feel-good fat-loss manual.
Dan John's chapters alone make this book a MUST-read for anyone with the desire to be better. And I don't just mean with regard to fat loss. I actually forgot, at times, that I was reading (yet another) book on fat loss. I stumbled across Dan's name because another trainer who I respect mentioned him in one of her digital products. Google led me to this book, and I am so glad the stars aligned. Dan's wisdom, humility and humor are a pleasure to read and he really digs into the way that perspective and approach contribute to our success (or lack thereof). But more importantly, he emphasizes enjoyment of the journey. He is a natural leader and left me feeling very motivated.Josh Hillis had tons of practical advice and delivers straight-talk about how to get the body you desire. It's very matter-of-fact and, if you want to lose fat, amazingly helpful. I love the sensible "11 Habits" as a foundation upon which to build a lifestyle. I've done loads of research on how to eat the right foods to look amazing naked, and these habits are spot-on--and much, much more clearly explained in this book than most other resources. "Do this. Get that. Do that. Get this." No BS. Plus, Josh explains the hierarchy of which habits are most important and how to apply them.If you are ready to dig into your own lifestyle habits, and truly try to unveil what works and what doesn't, this book is the next best thing to hiring a coach. If you're still feeling super emotional and angsty about whether your tired body can even lose weight anymore, the sensible advice in this book WILL HELP. It's reassuring to see the path. To paraphrase from the book, fat loss isn't a mystery, it's just a problem. And problems have solutions. If, however, you're feeling overly emotional and still looking for a magic bullet that will deliver an ideal body in 30 days or less ... you're just not ready. And that makes me sad for you. You deserve the solid information in this book. If you can step away from your despair (and junk food), I have full faith that THIS BOOK can help you get where you need to go. Imagine the difference a year can make. :) I finally did!!

Lots of good down to earth
Lots of good down to earth, easy to follow advice, covering both the nutrition and exercise aspects for a successful fat loss program. Didn't give it a 5 star rating (even considered a 3 star rating) as I found the sections written by Dan John completely useless-- he's either pitching his other books or waxing poetic about life. Save yourselves some time and aggravation by simply skipping his chapters.

WELL worth the price. Everything you need for fat loss.
Very common-sense approach to fat loss that will WORK. Josh gives 11 Habits to guarantee a successful food plan... but you don't have to attack them all at once. He lays out several strategies to approach them, based on your biggest needs for improvement. No food is forbidden, and there is no magic supplement. The strategy will teach you gradually how to eat food you enjoy in the right quality and quantity to lose fat.The workout program, like the food advice, is beginner-friendly and useful for even the most advanced trainee. Workouts can be done at home using bodyweight and kettlebells. The workouts are scalable-- you will not "graduate" or become too fit to be challenged. Here's an eye-opener, too: you don't have to work out as hard as you might think. The chapters by Dan John are worth rereading, as are most things Dan John writes. Josh Hillis is a fitness writer to watch: easy to read, relatable, immediately useful. And effective. Great value!

All the essentials you need in a single, accessible package
Bottom Line Up Front: If you read only one book on the subject of fitness/nutrition or changing your physique, make it this one.If you want to meet your physique goals but donโt know where to start...if you have been doing this for a while and want feedback from an industry whiz about the principles that matter the most...if you read only one book on the subject of fitness/nutrition this year....this one will be worth your time. This is one of the first nutrition or fitness books Iโve read that Iโve immediately recommended to friends. This is also one of the first book reviews Iโve written because I loved this content so much. The book provides you with all the tools you need to understand your relationship between food quantity/quality and your physique goals. The principles and โone habit at a timeโ approach is digestible no matter where youโre at on your fitness journey. This is a book that focuses on what matters and promotes balance in your approach. It also provides readers with a very accessible home gym solution and programming techniques. Every resource, including coaches cues, are here. Importantly, this is one of the few training books that starts from the view point of women but is inclusive to all. Any man or woman can find their target physique with the principles discussed in this book. Read it, then recommend it to a friend.

great book on simplifying the process
Really happy to see a full โdietโ book that tackles the most important aspects of any goal: planning for the goal, preparing for the goal, and executing the goal. Josh and Danโs emphasis on planning and prepping your meals as the two most important workouts of your week is a great takeaway, and is actually doable. Sustainable, safe, and sane, this book is a great place to start to educate yourself about eating strategically and losing weight.

The one health and fitness book everyone needs to read
To be quite honest, under normal circumstances, I would never have looked at this book. I happened to read about it on a blog that I visit occasionally and it intrigued me enough to at least check it. I am so glad that I did - what a game changer! There is currently one "1 star" review that effectively states that you don't learn anything because there are no references. In reality, that is the strength of this book.Josh and Dan give you the real life principles that you can apply to any program. For example, they don't tell you not to eat X or train with Y. They just tell you that some things take you closer to your goals and other things take you further away. They also introduce the concept of reasonableness. While there is nothing inherently wrong with doing a prepackaged 12 week program, it is not sustainable in the real world.People are too emotionally involved with diet and exercise programs and this book helps you to take the emotion out. You are not good or bad depending on what you ate for breakfast. If you are always on a diet, then it is not sustainable. This is the case for slow and steady wins the race. Get rid of the insanity and strict rules and find what you can live with forever. One of my favorite parts of the book is when they tell you to be an adult. Adults know that you can not eat fast food every day and have a healthy and sexy body. So be an adult and dont make a diet out of it. If you have it once in awhile, then dont beat yourself up. Enjoy it for what it is and know that it didnt progress you forward toward your goals but it didnt totally derail you either. This book is about balance. As a recovered bulimic, I can tell you that a lot of obesity and food issues are related to self-esteem and this yo-yo effect of beiing good or bad depending on what you ate/did on a particular day. Read this book and learn to find reasonableness and balance. Definitely in my top 5 health books and I read a lot.Thank you Josh and Dan for creating such an incredible resource

Needed an Editor
Lot of mixed feelings. On one hand, great information, incredibly comprehensive, love the authors. On the other itโs easily two, perhaps three times longer than it needed to be with significant retreads, meandering, and bloat.Iโd estimate 1/3 of the book is dedicated to convincing the reader of topics they likely do not need convincing on by virtue of purchasing the book.Another 1/3 to indulging ideas at nauseating length. And somewhere in the other 1/3, is a fantastic book.A recurring thought as I struggled to finish this book as a practitioner.โI apologize for such a long letter - I didn't have time to write a short one.โ - Mark Twain

Just wow!
This book managed to do for me what many others failed to do: It helped me to get on the right eating track. It showed me a healthy way to eat that I can sustain for the rest of my life and enjoy. It really IS about being well organized and about preparing in advance the food you need. Focusing on protein, healthy fats and vegetables/fruit when planning the meals DOES do the trick.Lots of fitness and diet books show people with visible abs on the front page. I don't like those because I know I will never have visible abs and thus I look like a failure from the start. I am glad that Dan John was the co-author of the book. Seeing a picture of him gave me hope: you can have the goal to eat right without wanting to look like a fitness model! You can have the desire to eat right because you want to perform better!I mainly focused on the eating plan in the book because I have my own training plan in order to improve in the throws. So I can't say too much about their workout plan. But their ideas and concepts about developing healthy and adult habits concerning food were a real eye-opener for me and it's the first book I'd recommend without any reservations.Besides, Dan John's texts about his training philosophy managed to take unnecessary loads off my shoulders (literally!) and yet inspired me to keep trying to do my best.

Great! Want to read it again straight away :)
Useful nutrition tips focused more on habit building rather than just nutrients. As a Precision Nutrition certified coach I cannot recommend this book enough. It's practical and the writing style is easy to pick up and understand. Great stuff, want to read it again and soak it up. :)

easy to follow advice that works
Actionable, easy to follow advice that works. What I like is that anyone can learn to do this with any diet. His use of habits are fantastic for doing each one is easy, at least easier than doing a diet overhaul. Learning these habits will ensure long term success.
