SEGA Mega Drive Mini (Electronic Games)

I bought this as a pure nostalgia hit and I must say it didn't disappoint! Firstly the product itself is beautifully packaged, with the graphics of the console on the front and all the original covers of the games on the back and it really makes you look forward to taking the thing out and playing it. As to the device itself, yes it's small, but perfectly proportioned, they have even made it so that the cartridge slot opens and closes. Ok, so you don't need a working looking cartridge slot, but it's a really nice touch. And I think the aesthetics of any of these mini-consoles are important as they really give you a feel for the quality of the product itself. Talking of quality and quantity, you get 42 mostly classic games here. So there are always one or two clunkers in any selection like this, but in general pretty much every game has it's merits, and some are such classics such as the Sonic games that they just speak for themselves. I really found myself becoming that excited young lad playing these games again, it does bring back that excitement. Most of them I had not played for well over 25 years and they still play really well and I have to say the emulations are spot on. I can't notice any lag in sound or video personally and they look crystal clear on a modern large screen TV. It's also nice that you can keep to the original 4/3 ratio, which is the way they are meant to be played. The controllers too are really first rate and feel good in the hands and do what you expect. Although, yes you could do with a 6 button controller to mash to really get into games like Streets of Rage II, saying that I still really enjoyed revisiting this brilliant beat em up again, a truly great game and just great fun, which is the whole point of little consoles like this. All in all a fantastic nostalgia hit for any gamer, beautifully packaged and made from Sega and just brings back the good old days of 16 bit gaming. A mini modern classic!

Having experienced a few of the previous plug & play Mega Drive consoles, when I heard Sega were going to produce their own mini classic version I was very excited, because at last, we should get a console that plays and sounds the way we remember, and it's been worth the wait. Sega have done themselves proud, by essentially recreating their famous 16bit Mega Drive console, but in a mini form factor, and with lots of 'good' games built-in. I own a few of these mini classics, in addition to my originals, and the attention to detail, and build quality on this one is absolutely fantastic, even the volume slider moves, and the controllers look & feel every bit as good as the originals (3 button pads included, but for street fighter ideally you'll want the 6 button pads). Obviously views on things like the choice of included games is subjective, but I think they've hit the right spot, in terms of popular titles, quality and quantity, with each game essentially costing just £1 at the current console price of £59.95 or so. The game selection menu itself is simple to use, and easy on the eye, and of course the games themselves never looked so good over HDMI, rather than the old RF or composite / scart. One of the problems with all the other so called mega drive machines is the sound tended to be slow, or scratchy etc, but of course Sega have done a sterling job, with no such problems evident on this console. I have to admit, from a collectors point of view, I live the attention to detail and small size, sits nicely on the shelf, but more importantly, the games are still really good fun to play, highlighting just how far Sega were able to push the technology of the time during the 16bit era. Just to really set the era, why not watch a few of their infamous Sega TV ads, brilliant! If your a Sega fan, I'd highly recommend, and if your a Nintendo fan, aren't you curious as to what Sega did and nintendon't?

For those looking to experience the joy of the Mega Drive without shelling out on the original console, then this is finally it! I had previously bought the PS2 disc of 30 Mega Drive classics and was thoroughly underwhelmed by it, as it was nearly all basic and poor games from the dawn of the Mega Drive.... this mini MD however comes packed with plenty of your favourites from back in the day. The highlights for the 42 included games for me are: Sonic 1 & 2 - everyone's favourite hyper speed platformer that is still great fun today Gunstar Heroes - a frantic and fiendishly addictive 2 player blaster Dynamite Heady - gorgeous graphics and cute and fun gameplay Streets Of Rage 2 - one of my favourite MD games ever, an absolute blast Road Rash 2 - violent motorbiking, especially great in 2 player mode Earthworm Jim - addictive platformer with some of the best MD graphics Street Fighter 2 - you remember it, you love it. Although it's not great with the standard 3 button controller (you can buy a 6 button for this mini) Eternal Champions - Sega's attempt to capitalise in the SF2/Mortal Kombat success and they make a very good job of it Castlevania - Nice retro haunted house hack n slash. Alisia Dragoon - early platform sword and sorcery with great playability Mean Bean Machine - fiendishly addictive Columns style game Thunder Force 3 - manic shoot em up mayhem Castle Of Illusion - wonderful 2 player puzzle platformer with awesome graphics Of course however, everyone will remember the terrible MD games and there are quite a few dates and poor games that play horribly here - Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Mega Man, Alex Kidd, Space Harrier 2, Wonder Bros, Super Fantasy Zone etc. However despite the duffers this is a case where, u like the Ps2 disc, the great far, far outweighs the bad, making this an essential purchase for any old school Mega Drive fan.

Qualche giorno fa mi sorprendevo di un cosa: mi sono recato all'interno di un noto Store dell'elettronica di consumo e, non appena dentro, in via del tutto automatica, mi sono diretto verso il reparto videogames. “Sono” del 1970. Tra qualche mese compirò mezzo secolo di vita. Eppure, notavo, come quel comportamento sopra descritto è esattamente il medesimo di quando ero adolescente e, testimone del “boom tecnologico” che ha portato all'avvio dalla c.d. “Rivoluzione Digitale”, mi recavo negli Store di consumo di allora, sempre desideroso di vedere, guardare e farmi sorprendere da una poltiglia di pixel colorati. Le passioni, quelle vere, non muoiono mai, ci seguono in tutte le fasi della vista e si adattano a questa perché, ritengo, che chi smette di giocare non diventa adulto ma diventa spento. La premessa è fondamentale per cogliere lo spirito della mia recensione che non sarà, come qualcuno può aspettarsi, incentrata su aspetti troppo tecnici (la rete è piena zeppa di informazioni in tal senso) ma, semmai, focalizzata sulle sensazioni che questo nuovo arrivato è stato capace di trasmettermi. Partiamo, dunque, con le mie impressioni. ASPETTO E MATERIALI: Il Sega Mega Drive Mini si presenta, a mio parere, con un indiscutibile aspetto “premium”, soprattutto rispetto alla concorrenza. Possiedo tutte le mini console sino ad ora in commercio, grazie al mio superpotere che riesce a trasformare in scontrini i soldi del mio portafogli (cit. “Doctor Game”) e devo dire che in questo caso siamo ai livelli massimi di quello che si può ottenere in tale ambito. Gli assemblaggi sono precisi, non ci sono sbavature. La console è una riproduzione pressoché perfetta e in scala ridotta (penso in un rapporto 1:2), dell'originale. I dettagli sono ricercati e sono lì dove devono essere. Tutto è curato, a partire dall'inserto in plastica lucida in corrispondenza della scritta “16-bit”. E' stato ricreato, ovviamente senza funzionalità alcuna, anche lo sportellino per l'inserimento delle cartucce nonché il controllo del volume. I joypad forniti, ben 2, sono di pregevole fattura. Forse i migliori sino ad ora provati con le mini console e trasmettono una sensazione di robustezza davvero appagante. Diciamo che la console è un gioiellino e fa la sua bella figura anche solo se esposta su una mensola, tanto è realizzata bene. Personalmente mi ha veramente emozionato perché, a mio parere, si intuisce come vi sia stata comunque la passione dietro le quinte di chi ha realizzato e progettato una macchina che ha come scopo anche quello di fungere da “ponte” col passato in una fusione riuscita di tradizione e modernità. Ma ci sono anche alcune cose che mi sono piaciute meno: in primo luogo l'assenza, nella parte sottostante, dei gommini di appoggio, così che, la console è soggetta ai normali movimenti alla prima sollecitazione. In secondo luogo, e questo è un difetto comune a tutte le mini console, non capisco come mai sia assente la presa di uscita delle cuffie, jack audio. Personalmente avrei gradito il supporto a questa comoda e, tutto sommato semplice, funzione da implementare. SOFTWARE: come dicevo in precedenza, la rete ed il “Tubo” forniscono già tantissimo materiale video su anteprime, prove e gameplay dei giochi inseriti nella console. Vorrei, tuttavia, svolgere alcune considerazioni personali, sempre legate all'aspetto “emotivo” ma, in questo caso, ben sostenuto anche da un contenuto concreto. La parte software, infatti, trasmette la stessa cura e passione di realizzazione della parte esterna. Non solo è possibile alternare la visualizzazione classica a quella che mostra i “dorsi” delle cartucce, come se stessero su una mensola una vicina all'altra, ma, a seconda dell'idioma selezionato, cambia anche il layout delle singole cartucce. Davvero un dettaglio degno di nota. Per quanto riguarda, poi, il parco titoli, direi che l'antologia offerta da “Sega”, rappresenta quanto di più completo si possa proporre per un'operazione nostalgia sensata ed emotivamente coinvolgente, con 42 titoli ottimamente assortiti. Non solo, infatti, sono presenti i titoli imperdibili e più rappresentativi della console, “Sonic The Hedgehog” in primis, ma anche altri titoli che hanno lasciato un segno ben indelebile nella storia di questa forma di intrattenimento: Shinobi III, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, Castle Of Illusion, Golden Axe, Tetris, Space Harrier II, Street Fighter II, solo per citarne alcuni. I grandi assenti, purtroppo, sono i giochi sportivi e spiace non poterli apprezzare su questa perfetta riproduzione, anche in virtù degli ottimi joypad forniti in dotazione. FUNZIONAMENTO : Inutile dire che i giochi “girano” alla perfezione, rendendo l'esperienza di gioco quasi indistinguibile dall'originale. Un mio consiglio è quello, tuttavia, di non utilizzare la Console su pannelli di dimensioni eccessive perché, è a mio parere, in questi casi si nota un'evidente disarmonia tra un impatto grafico realizzato per essere apprezzabile su pannellature che, all'epoca, erano mediamente di 26” e quelle attuali, di ben altra taglia. Io, personalmente, ho optato per un mini monitor da 11”, mutuato da un sistema DVD per auto, sul quale, alterno l'utilizzo delle mie mini console e che è dedicato solo a tale funzionalità. In commercio vi sono tantissime alternative, così come anche TV di “polliciaggio” inferiore che consentono di assolvere a tale compito in modo disinvolto, offrendo un'ottimale esperienza di gioco. Comunque se la domanda è se ci si emozioni a giocare con il Sega Mega Drive – mini – la risposta è che ci si emoziona, eccome!! CONCLUSIONI: Sega Mega Drive – mini – è riuscito a stupirmi ed emozionarmi al tempo stesso. Ogni operazione di questo tipo è una chiara ed ovvia “operazione commerciale con effetto nostalgia” ma in questo caso ho apprezzato davvero l'enorme rispetto verso il cliente tipico di questo prodotto, ovverosia chi, come me, è affetto da nostalgia inguaribile verso quegli anni irripetibili e che si trova, con piacere, ad avere sulla propria scrivania un pezzo irripetibile della storia videoludica che è un perfetto connubio di forma, sentimento e sostanza. The Sega Megadrive was my first console back in 1992 and this remake is just fabulous. The device is an exact smaller replica of the original. The controllers are true to the original as well. The menu is really cool and the games run like you have the cartridge in the console. Highly recommended if you are nostalgic like me.

Después de la NES y Super Nintendo Mini, ha llegado el turno de la Mega Drive Mini. Se ha hecho larga la espera, pero ha merecido la pena, sobre todo para los fans y nostálgicos de Sega. La caja incluye además de la consola emuladora (que estéticamente está muy lograda), el cable de alimentación USB de 145 cm (como ya pasara con las Nintendo, el adaptador a la red eléctrica no está incluido), un cable HDMI, 2 mandos (una lástima que sean los de 3 botones, y el de botones haya que comprarlo a parte por 20 euros) con una longitud de cable de 190 cm (lo que es de agradecer, pero si aun así nos quedan un poco cortos podemos utilizar cualquier alargador USB para que tengan la longitud apropiada) y un pequeño manual de instrucciones. No admite el uso de cartuchos antiguos, solamente se puede jugar con los 42 títulos incluidos en su memoria. Según conectamos la consola, lo primero que nos sale es una pantalla para escoger el idioma, una vez que lo hemos seleccionado podemos navegar por la pantalla para escoger entre los 42 juegos que se incluyen. En las opciones podemos cambiar el modo de visualización en pantalla de 4:3 (el que viene por defecto) y el 16:9 (el panorámico de TV actuales pero que es poco apropiado para ser fieles a la emulación).Va todo muy fluido cargando muy rápido. Dentro de un juego, si mantenemos pulsado durante unos segundos el botón de start accedemos a una pantalla en donde entre otras cosas podemos hacer un guardado de la partida, disponemos de hasta 4 ranuras por juego para guardar nuestras partidas (se puede hacer lo mismo pulsando el botón de reset de la consola). Dejando de lado si la selección podría ser mejor o no y que los juegos vengan todos en inglés, lo primero a destacar es que cuenta exactamente con el doble de juegos que la SuperNes Mini. Por otro lado, también destaca la emulación, es muy buena y en mi opinión muy fiel a la original, se nota que se lo han currado mucho, no es una chapuza como en otras minis. Sin ser 100% como el original sí que está muy logrado. Para aquellos que fuimos niños o adolescentes en los 90, esta pequeña joya merece mucho la pena sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que cuesta menos de 80 euros.
