I chose this because nobody writes software for Linux systems, so I needed a device which worked without any software. This is such a device.So far, I've transferred a few VHS tapes to MicroSD for testing the effort needed to convert my family movies to digital format (720x480 NTSC, 480P, 30fps).Operation is very easy. Once everything is connected, press play on VCR, quickly press record on this box.How do you know you need to stop recording on this box? When the VCR is finished, they always stop and maybe yours will also rewind. As most home movies will use the whole VHS tape, the VCR stopping means there is no more video to transfer, so I press to stop recording on this box.Pop out the MicroSD card, put the card into the appropriate media reader slot in my computer, there it is. AVI format, rather universal. I can edit the output file if I wish, using Linux video editing software.Cons: I cannot seem to get this device to go into media server mode. Pressing and holding the only button on this box for 3 seconds (per the manual it came with) does nothing that I can see on my Ubuntu 18.04 system (nothing added in lsblk, nothing seen in lsusb). I see I'll need to always eject the card, which may wear out the card mechanism. FWIW, I've pressed that one button for 2 through 30 seconds, this box just doesn't go into media server mode. The same button works fine for recording, so I have no idea what else I'd need to do to get the box to serve data via USB. Yes, I'm using the USB port on my computer as power, which is allowed, as the manual says I can do. ### ⭐ Is this thing supposed to work? *by R***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2020* I'd give it 0 stars if Amazon would let me. This thing powered up, showed me my video from my VCR but when I hit record, it just sat there, no red light, no error, nothing. Doesn't appear to record. I've tried 3 different micro sd card sizes with both fat32 and exFat formatting (manual says both are supported).
