What does a better job of upgrading picture and sound quality of older DVD's, upscaling or upconverting?

Upscaling and upconverting are used interchangeably though I'm sure the definitions my technically be different. As far as DVD's are concerned, neither do anything to the sound quality and applies to video quality as far as I know. The "up convert" capabilities of the Samsung DVD-C500 results in an excellent 1080p resolution. It still isn't true HD! No DVD upscale (or up converting) player will ever result a true HD picture, but this unit produces video of fantastic quality via HDMI in my opinion.

Does it show how much viewing time is left on the DVD?

The clock counter on the front of the player shows how much time the dvd has run,If you press Pause or Info, on the tv screen it displays how much the dvd has run/total time of dvd. So you have to do the math, but in that respect it lets you know how much time is left.

Does it have audio video component out, so i can connect another device, like tv to it?. the photo does not show the back of the item.

Well it has an hdmi output and rca outs and I think it has a ethernet input. So yeah it it does.
