The support unit of Brother was telephoned in accordance with instructions and I was instructed to take the typewriter to the nearest authorized repair center - a mere 49 miles away, I was informed. 49 miles if I had a helicopter, that is, the actual drive was 90 minutes and 75 miles away. The repair center informed me that (a) they would need to order parts and (b) would also charge at least $50 for labor. The fine print: the warranty provided by Brother only covered labor for 90 (count 'em) 90 days, an excellent gauge of the confidence of Brother in their product. This typewriter is now scrap metal, and in my estimation was scrap metal when purchased. Brother cannot be proud of this product and if it is not already out of production, should be cancelled immediately. I don't use the correction tape because I type on carbon copy paper a lot. This information comes from the owner manual. The ribbon is enough to get started, but either I typed more than I thought or this was a starter kit. It wasn't hard to find a replacement ribbon at my local Staple store. **Q: Is it correcting?** A: It does a wonderful job of correcting. You can do just one letter or the whole word. The correction tape really lasts. I am on my third ribbon and still haven't changed the tape and I do make mistakes!! This typewriter is great for the price. To correct you hit the backspace and then the correction key at the bottom near the space bar. To do a whole word you do the correction key at the top right with no backspace. I hope this helps. **Q: Is this good for writing long documents, such as a novel?** A: The Brother SX-4000 is an amazing machine and I don't see any reason why long documents couldn't be typed on it. However, I have never attempted to type for long hours on end, so I am not really qualified to answer this question. **Q: What type of font is included in the package, e.g. Times New Roman** A: On mine you cannot change the font, however, you can change the pitch, underline & bold your type. GOOD DEAL. *by L***E on April 2, 2014* As a typewriter collector and mechanical keyboard freak, I also have a very small collection of electronic typewriters. I use these machines for writing short notes and short stories. Starting to use manual typewriters for some time, I got really tired of typing on these machines, so I went for electronic typewriters. However I wanted a fresh and new one, clean and shiny. They shipped this typewriter all the way to Holland, which is great service. And it arrived in one piece. They could have packed the tyepwriter though, and not just the box that came with the SX-4000. As soon I was putting it into the socket, it stopped working. Beware, if you plan to use it in Europe, buy a step down converter from 230v to 110v! I changed the fuse and bought the converter, and it started working. The keys on this Brother give a nice tactile feedback! Not mushy rubberdome-ish. Very satisfying, but not as great as IBM model M and Wheelwriter keyboard feel, I think. This machine is light and portable and nice grey colour, preventing from getting yellow over time. Also, the display is very handy, saves some ribbon. Like the fact that the brother ribbon cassette is widely used in this machine and older Brother entry,- and midlevel typewriters. The professional EM or CE models use a different cassette. Another thing, is the sound the sx-4000 makes. Sounds like a machinegun or Chinese firework-ish. Very nice, not too loud. I think this Brother is also very durable. If there still were brand new IBM wheelwriters for sale, I would get one of those. But second best, has to be Brother! They just have proven themselves in time with both manual and electronic typewriters!
