Can I install this if my CD player is inoperative (cd error)?

That would depend. If the error is caused by your external CD Changer having problems. Then it likely would work for you. This plugs into the plug that goes to an external CD Changer making the external CD changer useless. If the error is coming from a cd player built into the factory head unit, then it would be difficult to determine without more troubleshooting by an expert.My advice would be to check the return policy. If allowed to return, buy it, try it. If not happy, return it for a refund. For many vehicles the installation procedure is not very difficult. Might waste and hour of your time.

If my wife and I both have our phones paired and are in the car at the same time, how does it know which one to pair with?

Hello, this is Travis at GROM Audio. The GROM BT will connect to the device it will discover first. If you will need to connect the other phone, you will need to disconnect the first connected phone.You can have up to 8 phones paired to GROM-BT, but you can have connected only one at a time.
