Great saint book
Great stories. My daughters enjoy reading this on their own or having us read aloud. Different from other saint books. Love this book and the one for boys, too.

Daughter loves!
Bought this for my 7.5 year old daughter for first communion. She loves it! She is a high-level reader, so it might not be appropriate for ALL kids at first communion age, but it is kid-friendly.

Do not buy if you want factual saint stories
I like to read saint stories to my children because I want them to hear about real-life heroes. While many of the saints have truly fantastic stories (in the supernatural sense), this book made me uncomfortable with the blurring of the lines between fact and fiction. The "artistic license" in story-telling and filling in details that couldn't be known was stretched too far for my liking. I kept reading and really wanted to like the book, but decided to return it after reading about St. Rita (who is a patron for difficult marriages because of her own difficult marriage) "Once upon a time there was a woman called Rita and she lived in Italy in a very nice house and garden with her husband whose name was Benedetto, which is Italian for Benedict. They were very happy and they had two little boys..." I am returning this book for something more factual.

A gem!
I am so glad Angelico published this little gem! We always give this as a present to any little girls we know who are making their First Holy Communion. Thank you Angelico!

Easy to read reference
Great text for a child or an adult to learn about a cadre of female saints in the Catholic Church.

Fun, interesting reading for the very young
Being of a generation that remembers the treat of reading this book, I am delighted to see it return to print. For the very young reader, it can be a wonderful daily visit with various heavenly friends, and one to spark the imagination and perhaps a bit of devotion here and there. The stories are basically selections from legends or particular aspects of saints' lives, presented in a rather "story hour" fashion. In fact, the narrative seems more like a favourite aunt telling a story than prose. The tales are not historically accurate in many cases, but there always is enough of solid underlying themes to get kids to learn them in spite of themselves. My one caution is that this is strictly an "early reader" book. It is not accurate or thorough enough for anyone old enough to be doing research for a religion class, and anyone above the age of 8 is likely to find the constant definitions of words annoying. Nor is it a "read aloud" book for tiny ones. Joan's manner of expression, which basically has her "telling" the story in her own style, would make the words sound stilted in another's voice. Joan Windham is an engaging, witty writer, and young girls of the current generation should enjoy this work as much as did their grandmothers.

Joan Windham's books on the saints (the 3 volume set and the individual 60 saints for boys and 60 saints for girls drawn from the 3 volume set) are absolutely charming - we have given them to delighted children as first communion presents - the one sadness is that they are out of print, but a proof of how good they are are the high prices used copies now go for. Entertaining and delightful lto read for both children and their parents.
