Based on Jules Vern's classic novel, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is the story of five men escaping from a Confederate prison in an observation balloon. When they land the balloon, they find themselves on a South Seas island where they encounter pirates, a giant bird, a giant crab and even Captain Nemo. Review: MYSTERIOUS ISLAND BLURAY from POWERHOUSE/INDICATOR 2019 - Not the greatest of films, but one that I seem to watch quite a lot. This BLURAY from POWERHOUSE/INDICATOR is a) good VFM b) Pretty good if slightly variable colour, picture, sound, and SUBTITLES not mentioned here0 Plenty of extras if that is your pleasure. C) An intersting if domehat bland cast. I always felt Craig made a good hero/leading man, and he gets his opportunity to show off his manly chest. Gary Merril steals his scenes, but the rest of the cast failed to excite - even Joan Greenwood! Beth Rogan is just there for eye candy and spends most of her screen time in a very scanty costume. This is a BOP adventure. Unpretentious entertainment and suitable for all the family. I should however, draw your attention to the fact that this is NOT Harryhausen's finest work! We are limited to a giant CRAB. An angry giant HEN, some angry BEES, and finally almost inevitably - agiant OCTOPUS (at least I think it was - the filming was very dark!!! I finish by commenting on Lom who makes for a very impressive Nemo, and the SFX such as they are, are pretty good (the matching of the matte/studio sets and the excellent location filming is awful. I have to give 5 stars for the sheer fun most viwers will get from this period adventure. Just remeber - it is not R H's best work Review: Wonderful what could be done without CGI - I saw this in 1962 at a children's matinee in a cinema in Hounslow. It was totally thrilling then and I still enjoy watching it now even after Ray Harryhausen's special effects expertise has been replaced by CGI. Now I guess kids would be bored within a few minutes but then balloons, submarines, giant creatures, pirates, fruity Joan Greenwood and her scantily clad daughter shipwrecked on the same island - what more could you ask?

Quality Movie, Quality Pic & Sound
A great movie with effects from the late great Ray Harryhausen that is not available to us in the UK. The picture and sound quality for this Blu-ray is beautiful considering its age. This difficult to attain movie had been restored very very well. This edition is an american version but don't worry it is region free. The Twilight versions of this movie are very hard to get hold of. However there is also a different version that has come to the UK recently if you are happy to pay for a box set where the picture quality is not as good and it has two other movies in it you may not want.
