The rusted tip was entirely my fault because I left this tool outside in a flower bed. This tool is absolutely essential in these hot drought conditions. My lawn stays green and my water bill stays reasonable. After a good aeration I treat the yard to Miracle Gro and the nutrients can get down to the roots instead of drying out on the surface. This tool is not hard to use and it doesn't get plugged in my sandy soil. As other reviews have pointed out, just let the water pressure do the work. As the water drills into the soil firmly but gently push down, perhaps rocking side to side. I don't even need to step on the foot brace. Wear some old shoes and shorts as you will probably get sprayed with water and possibly mud. I notice this happens more when the soil is hard and dry. It's an annoyance but so worth it for the benefit to your lawn. Also make sure the hose is screwed on nice and tight and you have a rubber washer in: that will reduce leakage and spraying. It comes with a plastic hanger looped on the handle. It makes it easy to keep all the plants alive when summer time without any rain and the wind is blowing all day. If you don't modify this tool, you have to let the water jet cut the hole. Go slow as it does this or it will plug.My modifications help make the tool a bit more useful and reduces the inevitable plugging. First, go to one of the home improvement box stores or and ACE and get a fitting that has a valve that crews into the tool. The hose will then screw onto the valve. The allows you to control the water flow. A little bit faster as the water cuts the hole and then slow it down as it is fully submerged so you don't blow away all the dirt.The second mod that I perform is to drill 2 small holes in the side of each prong. This will distribute part of the water sideways and also means that if you plug the tip hole the plants are still getting water. I also carry part of a wire coat hanger on my belt loop to unplug the prongs.One of the best ways to deep water you shrubs and beds. The holes are in the tip (one on each prong) and they will get clogged with dirt when pushing into the dirt. This can be a little annoying at times but only 1 hole tends to get clogged at a time. When it happens I simply stick my finger over the one that isn't clogged and the pressure of the water clears the clog. Then I stick it back into the holes in the dirt that I just created. I haven't had to resort to toothpicks or anything like that as of yet. A lot of people complain that it doesn't have holes on the sides but I think that would actually make it more difficult to get it into the dirt if it did.Also, make sure you buy a separate attachment where you can turn off your water right where it connects.
