Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Key Gen2 Plus (UCK-G2-PLUS), Single,dual band

I have been using UniFi Wireless Access Points for my customers for years. They are great for business level wireless deployments (as well as home), easy to manage and deploy, and have a lot of the features of enterprise setups without the cost or monthly fees. The CloudKey G2+ is how I manage most of my deployments. I use one of these for my home deployment of 5 WAPs, 6 cameras and 3 UniFi Talk phones as well, and it has been rock solid. The CloudKey can manage a few of UniFi's product lines, including: Wireless (Network), Cameras (Protect), Phones (Talk), Access Control (Access), Multimedia Displays (Connect) and Deployment Visualization (Innerspace). There is a lot to be said about all of these technologies, but I will focus on the CloudKey for this review. The CloudKey is a small, simple to install management and storage device. It comes with all of the software you need installed and can be provisioned easily via a web browser or a cell phone app using Bluetooth. Once provisioned and added UniFi Site Manager, web based management is possible from anywhere and free! Overall it is a great little device and will continue to be my preferred management method for my UniFi deployments, but because there is a hard drive in them and a lithium-ion battery, I put them on a 5 year replacement schedule for my deployments. PROS: Small, inexpensive and simple to deploy Intuit screen for a quick glance to see WAP and Camera status 1TB HDD included (replaceable) for NVR storage and backups Lithium-ion battery for safe shut down in case of power failure Free management from anywhere via web browser or cell phone app Automated Cloud backups Configurable notifications (via UniFi Site Manager) for all applications CONS: Lithium-ion battery is not user replaceable HDD is replaceable, but is a spinning drive with a limited lifetime. No power supply included (These are PoE powered but can also be powered via USB-C with a QC 2.0/3.0 adapter)

I've had this little guy running 7x24 for six months with no issues, zip, nada. One upgrade you should do right off the bat is to change the hard drive to a high performance SSD with more capacity than 1TB unless you are only going to run two or three cams. I'm using a 2TB Samsung V-Nand SSD 860 EVO SATA 6Gb/s and I'm running 12 G3 cams and one G4 cam. I only get about one week of recorded video and would like a 4TB SSD but they are really expensive. The Android "Protect" app works well. The user interface is well designed for both the network management and Protect. Simple and intuitive. Before this I was using Ubiquiti's NVR box for the cameras and it was a complete disaster, very unreliable and undependable, slow. So that now sits on the shelf with all of the other orphans. Cons: I really haven't discovered any. This little box sits in my rack and does its thing - it's happy and I'm happy.

You have to understand what this device is before you pull the trigger. This is the exact same thing as a Unifi Controller system coupled with their Unifi Protect software and a dedicated hard drive all inside a neat little package with a dedicated management interface. You can easily pick up a Raspberry Pi 3+ for $35, a POE hat for $30, a 1TB hard drive for cheap and have almost the exact same thing minus the fancy case with the onboard screen and device manager. Honestly, for the home IT demons out there who love to tinker I would even recommend that route. Another option, if you already have a server running VMs, you could easily build a headless Linux VM running Debian. Carve off 4GB of memory, dedicate a couple CPU cores or load balance across more and dedicate a physical hard drive for to it for video. However, what these guys have done with this device is very impressive. This is a solid product for the footprint both in power consumption and size. I'd buy it again only so I wouldn't have to tinker with the server side of things. This device makes network management of Unifi APs and Cams super simple. The major con I have about this device though, vendor lock-in on the IP cameras. There's no option to add existing 3rd party cameras to the system.

The company I work for uses Ubiquiti/Unifi equipment so when I had a chance to purchase some equipment for my home office I opted to upgrade my network. My first purchases were Unifi Outdoor AP's, I used the controller software on a computer that is part of our home theater setup since it's on 24/7. I opted for the Cloud Key Plus so that I could migrate the AP's off the pc, and have a dedicated device for the AP's. I opted for the Plus because I'm also installing some of the G3 Flex camera's by Ubiquiti. So far it has done it's job, I have two of three AP's installed and one camera installed. Wifi is solid, the controller just sits there displaying data about the AP's and then the Unifi Protect/Camera side. Not much I can say, it has all the features and functions of the controller software that I have noticed. I don't have a fancy setup so most of the settings are left at their default setting.

I purchased the UCKG2+ back in 2019. It worked flawlessly for about 3 years. At that point i found the battery inside was no longer holding a charge. I also was finding my Unifi Protect cameras were going offline ALL the time and the unit was crashing. I did some research and found that the battery issue is common. I opened up the device and uninstalled the battery which had swollen to twice its size. The device is not intended to be service. It was also running VERY warm. It uses the chassis as a passive heatsink. I had mine in a rack with the optional rack accessory for home use and was being powered by a POE UniFi switch. I decided to try a few troubleshooting techniques and while i had it apart i drilled some holes in to the aluminum for airflow. I decided to replace the HDD with an SSD. This helped stability but not a full fix. I then unplugged it from the POE switch and powered it via USB-C. This didn't have much change. Finally I had an extra POE injector and used that for power. This had the best outcome and was able to get another year out the device. It finally quit turning on early this year and bought a new unit. I would much rather replace the device every few years than pay a SAS model monthly fee like others. I just would have liked to have known (which is impossible) that this device is not intended to be as robust as i needed it to be. I'm using all their enterprise gear (gateway & switches) but there was no other option to get cloud access besides getting a Dream Machine. And that device didn't have the features or power i needed. So i the end, if i have to pay $200 every 3 years is still cheaper than paying 10-20 a month for a worse product like EnGenius, then I'm still happy.

I was running The free software NVR (network video recorder) from Ubiquity to test my G3 Micro camera. Since this did such a good job, I decided to pick up this box instead of leaving a computer running 24/7. First surprise: It doesn't come with a power adapter. Fortunately, I had a POE switch to use in the right location. Second surprise: It uses the Unifi Protect app rather than Unify Video I was using previously. The apps are a bit different. Unifi Video was a little more intuitive and has some different features than Unify Protect. For example, Protect allows geofencing but Video has more control over recording and motion detection. There are a lot of features that can talk nicely to other Ubiquity Unifi products like routers, switches, and access points. Unfortunately it doesn't communicate with the Ubiquity Amplifi products like the mesh router I have. It also won't talk to non-Ubiquity cameras which is a shame because I would change over my EagleEye Networks system if Protect would use the cameras. It would be a large investment for me to replace all of my existing cameras. However, with all it's faults, this system beats the heck out of the consumer cameras I tried. The apps have a much shorter buffering time and better quality video. I had trouble with other cameras systems just stopping notifications and require a reboot to start them again. In addition, I had problems with app updates breaking things badly. For example, one update on IOS wouldn't let the app connect anymore (but the Android update worked fine). Pros: Great video, good notifications Cons: Takes a bit of effort to configure it properly. For example, I needed to replace the web server certificate with one that the browsers see as secure. This took some hunting on the internet to figure out how to do it via ssh to copy the certificate over, and run a script to install and restart the services.

I bought this Cloud Key Oct 2019 along with their 16 port switch and 3 AC-Pro’s for our house. It made it 4.5 years with two cameras recording 24/7 before the power supply on the POE stopped working, verified with other known good cables and POE ports on switch. Powered via USB-C and back up and going again. Ease of use with all components makes this super easy to manage.

I've been working with the Unifi series systems for a while now. I've ran cloud key instances on a raspberry pi and on a ubuntu VM. Bought this to gain Unifi Protect. Overall most things are rather simple to do but some more advance things can be painful. The Unifi series is amazing compared and have recommended many to switch over to their Access Points (AP). The most valuable advice I can give people though working with Unifi series is make sure you have a backup either in the cloud or some where offline not on the cloud key. Incase something happens like locking yourself out or possible data corruption on the cloud key.

Lange Zeit habe ich zur Überwachung meiner Ubiquiti UniFi Netzwerkkomponenten den UniFi CloudKey der ersten Generation (aber schon mit USB-C) verwendet. Er war eher häßlich und besaß bis auf eine kleine, durch den weißen Kunststoff durchscheinende, Status LED keinerlei Anzeigemöglichkeiten. Ein weiterer, für mich sehr gravierender, Kritikpunkt war das ständige Aufhängen der Software. Ganz besonders zuverlässig hing sich das gesamte System nach dem Unterbrechen der Spannungsversorgung auf. Häufig half dann nur noch der Reset und das Einspielen eines Backups. Das Prozedere integrierte ich bald in meine wöchentliche Todo Liste. Äußerst ermüdend und heutzutage eigentlich völlig überflüssig. Offenbar dachten sich das auch die Ingenieure von Ubiquiti! Mit der 2. Generation ihres UniFi CloudKey und dem hier rezensierten UnFi CloudKey Gen2 plus haben sie wirklich alles besser gemacht was vorher "weniger" gut war. Aber der Reihe nach. Hier mein Bericht nach 4 Monaten Dauertest. Die Hardware: Schon beim Auspacken aus der Apple-Style Verpackung merkt man, dass man etwas gekauft hat was den Anspruch hat zu funktionieren und zu gefallen. Das Alugehäuse wirkt wertig und der verwendete schwarz glänzende Kunststoff nicht ganz so billig. Auch wenn, besonders deutlich in der Frontblende der Schublade für die HDD zu sehen, sogenannten Sink Marks* deutlich im Gegenlicht zu sehen sind, macht das ganze noch einen ordentlichen Eindruck. Aber lassen wir die Kirche mal im Dorf - Es ist eine Netzwerkkomponente kein Kunstwerk. *(Einfallstellen im Kunststoff an Stellen die auf der Rückseite durch dickeres Material verstärkt sind. Sowas passiert beim Spritzen der Teile während der Produktion und ist recht aufwändig zu verbessern) Zum Thema Wärmeentwicklung: Das Gerät ist passiv gekühlt. Das heißt es verfügt über keinen sich drehenden Lüfter, sondern benutzt sein Alugehäuse als Kühlkörper mit dessen Hilfe es die Wärme an die Umgebung abgibt. Also ja, das Gehäuse des CloudKey wird im Betrieb recht warm. Und das ist auch völlig ok. Eine Prozessortemperatur von ca. 50 °C ist normal und auch gut so. Dafür ist das Gerät flüsterleise. Um der Luft ein wenig mehr Angriffsfläche zu bieten habe ich noch vier kleine Gummifüßchen an der Unterseite des CloudKey angebracht. So wird nun auch die Unterseite von Luft umströmt. Neben einer etwas besseren Wärmeabfuhr konnte ich so auch die Vibrationsgeräusche der 1TB Festplatte verringern. - Die Vibrationen sind ohne diese Maßnahme übrigens ausreichend gewesen das Gerät mit der Zeit etwas wandern zu lassen. Der CloudKey stand über Nacht stets leicht verdreht. Ein Aufrüsten der Festplatte ist kein Problem. Bis zu 5TB HDDs im 2,5 Zoll Format sind laut Hersteller möglich. Auch SSDs sollen kein Thema sein und UniFi Protect einen Turbo in Sachen Ansprechverhalten und Zugriffszeiten auf das Videomaterial verleihen. Aber Achtung: Nicht jede Platte läuft im CloudKey. Großartig ist, dass nun ein kleiner Akku in das Gerät integriert wurde der wie eine USV funktioniert. Sobald die Spannungsversorgung (ob über Netzteil am USB-C Port oder über PoE vom Switch) getrennt wird hat der CloudKey noch genug Reserven im Akku um sauber herunterzufahren. Sobald wieder eine Spannungsversorgung hergestellt ist fährt er selbstständig wieder hoch und läuft ganz normal weiter als wäre nichts gewesen. Das hört sich trivial an. Aber jeder der die erste Generation des CloudKey hatte wird diese Neuerung sicherlich genauso feiern wie ich! Denn das bedeutet endlich keine Backups mehr einspielen zu müssen sobald man mal aus Versehen das Netzwerkkabel zieht, oder das Firmware Update vom Switch zu früh gestartet hat. Wow. Abgerundet wird das neue Design von dem nun endlich vorhandenen Display an der Vorderseite des CloudKey. Hier werden einem im Wechsel drei verschiedene Statusanzeigen eingeblendet: Die Netzwerkadresse und der Name des Gerätes, der SDN (Controller) Status und der UniFi Protect Status. Leider hat man zur Zeit keinerlei Möglichkeiten die Anzeige anzupassen oder auszuschalten oder auf den Inhalt Einfluß zu nehmen. Die Software: Kurz, die Software ist genial. Auf dem CloudKey Gen2 plus ist der UniFi SDN Controller und UniFi Protect vorinstalliert. Der UniFi SDN Controller läuft bei mir in Firmeware Version 5.10.26 und ist großartig. Ich verwalte darüber ein recht kleines Heimnetz mit 3 Switches, 1 AP AC Pro und dem USG 3P. Mit der Zeit habe ich fast alle Features die das System so bietet mal ausgetestet und bin jedes mal wieder auf Neue von dem Konzept begeistert die Verwaltung aller Geräte einer eigenen Komponente (--> CloudKey) zu überlassen. Wo man bei anderen Systemen umständlich jede IP von jedem Gerät einzeln aufrufen und die Einstellungen mühsam vornehmen und organisieren muss macht man bei UniFi alles zentral an einer Stelle. Alle anderen Geräte werden im Hintergrund provisioniert und hinterher läuft einfach alles. Mit dem CloudKey (auch schon mit der alten Version) ist es übrigens auch möglich ein Gastportal mit Voucher Funktion einzurichten. Für den Privatgebrauch vielleicht etwas übertrieben, aber bei Partys doch manchmal recht nützlich. :-) UniFi Protect (bei mir Version 1.11.3) ist exklusiv nur auf dem CloudKey Gen2 plus (nicht auf dem ohne "plus") verfügbar. Damit lassen sich bis zu 20 Überwachungskameras der UniFi Serie einbinden und verwalten. Ich nutze zur Zeit drei UniFi G3 flex zur Überwachung meines Grundstücks. Das System ist klasse. Das Einbinden der Kameras war kinderleicht und die Software wird regelmäßig aktualisiert und um Features erweitert. Manche Dinge haben noch einen leichten Beta Beigeschmack, aber aus Erfahrung der letzten 4 Monate bin ich mir sicher, dass sich das bald ändert. Wichtig zu wissen ist, dass sämtliches aufgenommenes Videomaterial lokal auf dem CloudKey gespeichert wird. Nicht wie bei vielen anderen Anbietern wo ein Abo für Cloud Speicher abgeschlossen werden muss. Beim CloudKey bedeutet "Cloud" nur, dass man das System auf Wunsch über die sichere UniFi Cloud von überall auf der Welt erreichen und so auch immer sehen kann was am überwachten Ort los ist. Wenn man das nicht will, muss man das nicht aktivieren. Schließlich bietet das UniFi USG auch einen einfach einzurichtenden VPN Zugang mit dem genau das auch möglich ist. Ganz ohne Cloud und fremde Server. Der Speicherplatz der werksseitig verbauten 1TB HDD von Toshiba reicht übrigens bei Einbindung von drei Kameras für die Aufzeichnung von ca. zwei Wochen Videomaterial in voller 1080p Auflösung bei 25fps und einer Bitrate von 6000Kbps. Wer mehr Aufzeichnen will hat die Möglichkeit eine bis zu 5TB große 2,5 Zoll Platte nachzurüsten. In den Mikro SD Karten Slot oberhalb des LAN Ports habe ich noch eine 32GB SD Karte eingesetzt. Auf ihr werden alle Backups gespeichert sowie der Endgeräte-Datenverlauf. Das System ist bei mir in keinster Weise ausgelastet. Der 2.0 GHz Achtkern Prozessor wird bei mir stets nur zu unter 10% gebraucht und die 3GB Arbeitsspeicher nur zu 50%. Ein gutes Gefühl Reserven zu haben. Was mir nicht gefällt: 1. Der Preis. Er ist verdammt hoch für etwas das ohne noch weitere Komponenten des Systems zu besitzen zu nichts zu gebrauchen ist. Das reißt ein heftiges Loch in die Argumentationskette mit der/ dem Liebsten. 2. Die Backup Strategie von UniFi Protect. Der Austausch einer defekten Kamera hat mich mal ein paar Stunden gekostet da die Backup Strategie für mich nicht schlüssig war. Das Ende vom Lied war, dass ich jede einzelne Kamera mit der "Leitermethode" vor Ort resetten musste um sie neu an das System anzulernen. Ich hoffe auf ein Update was dieses Problem adressiert. Fazit: Klare Kaufempfehlung für jeden der Spaß an funktionierender Technik hat. Für die Privatperson vielleicht etwas übertrieben... aber eigentlich auch nicht. :-)
